ՄԵԾ ՊԱՀՔԸ

«Եւ արդ ասէ Տէր Աստուած ձեր. Դարձարո՛ւք առ իս յամենայն սրտէ ձերմէ, պահօք, և լալով և կոծելով» (Յովհ. 2:12)։

Մեծ Պահքի խորհուրդը քրիստոնէութեան մէջ արձանագրած է մասնայատուկ նշանակութիւն, հիմք ունենալով Քրիստոսի կեանքի օրինակ: Բաւական է հետևիլ Քրիստոսի երկրաւոր կեանքի ընթացքին, և ապա այն ժամանակ խորագոյնս կ’ըմբռնենք, որ Պահքը և ի մասնաւորի Մեծ Պահքը հոգևոր ճանապարհորդութիւն մըն է, որուն ամբողջ տևողութիւնը քրիստոնեայի կեանքը կ’առաջնորդէ դէպի Աստուած: Պարզ խօսքով Պահքը, որուն համազօր արժէք ունի նաև աղօթքը, մեզ կը մօտեցնէ առ Աստուած:

Պահքի աւանդութիւնը արձանագրուած է հին Ուխտին մէջ, ապա նոյնը իր լրումին կը հասնի Քրիստոսի կեանքո՛վ մարմնաւորուած: Քրիստոս իր Երկրաւոր կեանքը սկսաւ Պահեցողութեամբ ու աղօթքով, մկրտութենէ անմիջապէս յետոյ, երբ առանձնացաւ անապատի մէջ, իր Անձին օրինակովը հաստատեց դէպի մաքրութիւն տանող հոգևոր ճանապարհորդութիւնը իւրաքանչիւրի կեանքին համար։

Քրիստոնեային կեանքը լուսաւորող հոգևոր մարզանք մըն է պահեցողութիւնը՝ աղօթքով առաջնորդուած: Բանանք Աւետարանները և այնտեղ պիտի գտնենք պատգամներ, որոնք պարզօրէն կը բացատրեն պահեցողութեան ու աղօթքի կարևորութիւնը մեր առօրեայ կեանքի ընթացքին: Ուրեմն հետևինք Քրիստոսի, և Մեծ Պահքի քառասնօրեայ հոգևոր ճանապարհորդութեան մէջ մնանք, որպէսզի ճաշակենք մեր ներաշխարհին պայծառակերպութիւնը, որովհետև Աստուած կը բնակի լուսաւոր էութեան մէջ:

Մեծ Պահքի հոգևոր ճանապարհորդութեան նպատակը բարի է, քանզի մեր մէջ կը մշակենք Քրիստոնէական նկարագիրը, Աստուծոյ սիրովն ու իմաստութեամբ ապրելու, ներողամտութեան ոգին արմատաւորելու մեր մէջ, և ամէնէն էականը՝ կատարելու համար խոստումը դառնալու նոր Մարդ ի Քրիստոս: Քանզի դժուար թէ խորապէս կարողանանք ըմբռնելու Քրիստոսի Յարութեան խորհուրդը առանց մեր մէջ տարածելու սրբութեան գիտակցութիւնը, հաւատքի անկշռելի տարողութիւնը:

Today, as we gather in solemn remembrance, our hearts are heavy yet filled with gratitude for the lives of Khatchik Haigaram Akatcherian and his beloved wife, Sossy Akatcherian. Their journey, marked by dedication, service, and unwavering faith, has left an indelible mark on the fabric of our community at St. James Armenian Apostolic Church.

Khatchik Haigaram Akatcherian, a native of Iskandaroun, Turkey, and Sossy Akatcherian, born in Tripoli, Lebanon, embarked on their sacred union in October of 1961 in Beirut, Lebanon. In 1976, with their three cherished children, Betty, Heratch, and Maral, they embraced a new chapter in the United States, where they found a spiritual home at St. James Armenian Apostolic Church.

Their commitment to our parish was profound. Baron Khatchik generously lent his talents to aid Fr. Arshag Khachadourian, providing invaluable translations for the weekly Oshagan. His dedication exemplified the spirit of service, bridging languages to foster deeper connections within our congregation.

Digin Sossy, a beacon of warmth and compassion, was instrumental in the establishment of our Armenian Language Saturday School. Her tireless efforts and leadership within the St. James Ladies Society enriched our community, organizing memorable events such as fashion shows, luncheons, and the creation of a cherished church cookbook. Through her endeavors, she wove bonds of friendship and unity, nurturing the spirit of fellowship that defines our parish family.



Together, Khatchik and Sossy embodied the essence of devotion. Their unwavering commitment to the Armenian church permeated every aspect of their lives, igniting a flame of love and reverence within the Akatcherian Family. Their legacy is not only preserved in the annals of our church's history but etched in the hearts of their children and grandchildren, who continue to be inspired by their example of selflessness and faith.

In reflecting on their profound impact, we are reminded of the words of Philippians 2:3-4, which resonate deeply with the spirit of service that defined Khatchik and Sossy's lives: "Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others."

As we offer our prayers for the repose of their souls, let us honor the memory of Khatchik and Sossy Akatcherian by emulating their spirit of dedication, compassion, and unwavering faith. May their legacy continue to inspire generations to come, guiding us in our journey of service and devotion to the Armenian church and its cherished community.

In loving memory, we commend their souls to the embrace of our Heavenly Father, trusting in His eternal mercy and grace.

My beloved brothers and sisters in Christ,

Today, as we gather to commemorate the Vartanantz feast, we are reminded of the profound love of our forefathers for the Church and their unwavering patriotism. The events of 451, the clash between pagan Persia and Christian Armenia, resonate through the corridors of time, echoing the courage and sacrifice of Vartan Mamigonian and his companions.

In the face of persecution and oppression , Vartan Mamigonian stood as a beacon of faith and resilience. He understood that true Christianity transcends mere ritual and tradition; it is a living, breathing commitment to the truth that emanates from the heart. 

Vartan's leadership exemplified the inseparable bond between love for the Church and love for one's homeland. His courage inspired his comrades to stand firm against tyranny, to defend not only their religious convictions but also the very essence of their Armenian identity.

The sacrifice of Vartan and his companions on the Avarayr plains speaks volumes about the resilience of the Armenian spirit. Though outnumbered, they refused to yield to the forces of oppression, demonstrating that the power of faith and patriotism knows no bounds.

May their courage inspire us dear faithful to stand firm in the face of adversity , to defend our faith and our heritage with unwavering resolve. And may we, like Vartan and his companions, be willing to sacrifice everything for the sake of Christ and His Church.

In the words of St. Athanasius: "The Church is our mother; let us remain faithful to her in all things, even unto death."

May God bless you all, and may the memory of Vartan Mamigonian and his companions be eternally cherished in our hearts. Amen.

His Eminence Archbishop Hovnan Derderian, Primate of the Western Diocese and the Ladies Auxiliary of the Western Diocese are proud to present the Diocese’s Debutante Ball on Sunday, February 18, 2024 at the world-famous Beverly Wilshire Hotel.

For nearly 50 years, the Debutante Ball has been a beloved tradition in the Armenian community. It is a celebration of family and a joyous occasion to reconnect with friends. This year, 19 young women including many from churches throughout the Diocese will be presented as debutantes and along with their escorts will take part in this time-honored and memorable event. 

This year’s Mistress of Ceremonies is Sona Movsesian. Movsesian has worked for Conan O’Brien on both his TV show and podcast, accompanying him on a trip to Armenia which was documented and featured on one of O’Brien’s TV specials. She is a New York Times bestselling author with her 2022 book, The World’s Worst Assistant. In recent years she has also assisted a number of organizations in their support of causes affecting the Armenian community.

All are invited to attend the Debutante Ball, as well as show support by placing an ad in the event’s keepsake booklet to extend congratulations to the participants. All proceeds from the booklet will benefit The Archbishop Vatche Hovsepian Hye Camp Program and Artsakh relief efforts.

The black-tie-optional event begins with a cocktail reception at 5:00, followed by the presentation of Debutantes at 6:00. Dinner and dancing will follow. The Ladies Auxiliary is excited to announce that Greg Hosharian & the Armenian Pops Ensemble will provide the music throughout the evening.

ԿԻՐԱԿԻ , ՓԵՏՐՈՒԱՐ 11, 2024

ԱՒԵՏԱՐԱՆ ԸՍՏ ՄԱՏԹԷՈՍԻ 6:1-21 

Զգո՜յշ, Աստուծոյ հանդէպ ձեր պարտաւորութիւնները մարդոց ներկայութեան մի՛ կատարէք ցոյցիհամար, որովհետեւ այդ պարագային վարձատրութիւն պիտի չստանաք ձեր երկնաւոր Հօրմէն:

Երբ ողորմութիւն կ’ուզես տալ, փող ու թմբուկով մի՛ ըներ՝ մարդոց ուշադրութիւնը գրաւելու համար, ինչպէս կեղծաւորները կ’ընեն ժողովարաններու մէջ եւ հրապարակներու վրայ՝ մարդոցմէփառաւորուելու ակնկալութեամբ: Վստա՛հ եղէք, միայն ատիկա է անոնց վարձատրութիւնը: Ընդհակառակը, երբ դուն ողորմութիւն կու տաս, ձախ ձեռքդ թող չգիտնա՛յ թէ ինչ կ’ընէ աջ ձեռքդ: Այսպիսով ողորմութիւնդ գաղտնի ըրած կ’ըլլաս, եւ քու երկնաւոր Հայրդ, որ անտեսանելի է եւ կըտեսնէ կատարածդ, քեզ պիտի վարձատրէ յայտնապէս:

Նմանապէս, երբ կ’աղօթես՝ կեղծաւորներուն մի՛ նմանիր, որոնք կը սիրեն ժողովարաններու մէջ եւհրապարակներու անկիւնները կեցած աղօթել, որպէսզի մարդիկ իրենց աղօթելը տեսնեն: Վստահեղէք, միայն ատիկա է անոնց վարձատրութիւնը: Դուն երբ կ’աղօթես՝ մտի՛ր սենեակդ, գոցէ՛ դուռը եւծածուկ կերպով աղօթէ քու երկնաւոր Հօրդ: Եւ Հայրդ որ անտեսանելի է ու կը տեսնէ կատարածդ, քեզի պիտի հատուցանէ յայտնապէս:

Տակաւին, երբ կ’աղօթէք, մի՛ շատախօսէք հեթանոսներուն նման, որոնք կը կարծեն որ եթէ շատխնդրեն՝ լսելի պիտի դառնան: Արդ, մի՛ նմանիք անոնց, որովհետեւ ձեր Հայրը գիտէ ինչ որ պէտք էձեզի, նոյնիսկ երբ տակաւին իրմէ խնդրած չէք: Ուրեմն այսպէս աղօթեցէք.-

Հայր մեր երկնաւոր,

սրբաբանուի՛ անունդ.

թող գայ արքայութիւնդ,

թող կատարուի քու կամքդ,

ինչպէս որ երկինքի մէջ՝

այնպէս ալ երկրի վրայ:

Ամենօրեայ մեր հացը

այսօր եւս մեզի տուր:

Ներէ՛ մեր յանցանքները,

ինչպէս որ մենք կը ներենք

անոնց՝ որոնք մեզի դէմ

նոյնպէս յանցանք գործած են։

Եւ թոյլ մի՛ տար

որ փորձութեան մէջ իյնանք.

այլ մեզ չարէն ազատէ՛:

Որովհետեւ քուկդ են միշտ

արքայութիւնը, զօրութիւնը եւ փառքը։ Ամէն:

Որովհետեւ եթէ մարդոց ներէք իրենց յանցանքները, ձեր երկնաւոր Հայրն ալ պիտի ներէ ձեզի: Իսկեթէ մարդոց չնե-րէք իրենց յանցանքները, ձեր Հայրն ալ պիտի չներէ ձեր յանցանքները:

Երբ ծոմ կը պահէք, տրտումերես մի՛ ըլլաք կեղծաւորնե-րուն նման, որոնք իրենց երեսը կը կախեն, որպէսզի մարդոց ցոյց տան թէ ծոմ կը պահեն: Վստահ եղէք, միայն ատիկա է անոնցվարձատրութիւնը:

Ընդհակառակը, երբ դուն ծոմ կը պահես, օծէ՛ գլուխդ եւ լուա՛ երեսդ, որպէսզի մարդիկ չտեսնեն թէծոմ կը պահես, այլ՝ միայն Հայրը, որ անտեսանելի է. եւ Հայրդ, որ կը տեսնէ կատա-րածդ, քեզ պիտիվարձատրէ յայտնապէս:

Ձեր հարստութիւնը մի՛ դիզէք երկրի վրայ, ուր ցեցն ու ժանգը կը փճացնեն եւ կամ գողերը պատըքանդելով ներս կը մտնեն ու կը գողնան զայն: Այլ ձեր հարստութիւնը դիզեցէք երկինքի մէջ, ուր ցեցնու ժանգը չեն կրնար փճացնել զայն, եւ ոչ ալ գողերը կրնան պատը քանդելով ներս մտնել եւ գողնալ: Որովհետեւ ձեր հարստութիւնը ո՛ւր որ է, հոն կ’ըլլայ նաեւ ձեր սիրտը:

ՆԱՄԱԿ ՀՌՈՄԱՅԵՑԻՆԵՐՈՒՆ 13:11-14:23

Սիրոյ այս սկզբունքով ընթացէք, գիտնալով թէ ի՛նչ ժամանակի մէջ կ’ապրինք: Ժամանակն է որքունը թօթափենք եւ արթննանք, որովհետեւ հիմա փրկութիւնը աւելի մօտ է մեզի, քան այն ատեն՝երբ հաւատացինք: Գիշերը ահա կ’անցնի եւ ցերեկը մօտ է: Ուստի խաւարի գործերէն հեռանանք եւլոյսի զէնքերը մեր վրայ առնենք, ապրելու համար այնպէս՝ ինչպէս վայել է լոյսի մէջ քալողներուն, փոխանակ անառակութեամբ, արբեցութեամբ, խառնակեցութեամբ ու պղծութեամբ, կամնախանձով ու հակառակութեամբ ապրելու: Տէր Յիսուս Քրիստոսի նկարագիրը ձեր վրայ առէք, եւմարմնի ցանկութիւնները կատարելու հետամուտ մի՛ ըլլաք: 

Հաւատքի մէջ տկարացած մէկը ընդունեցէք՝ առանց իր խիղճը տանջող կասկածներըքննադատելու: Օրինակ, մէկը կը հաւատայ՝ թէ ամէն ինչ կարելի է ուտել: Ուրիշ մը, որ կասկած ունիայդ մասին, բան­ջարեղէն կ’ուտէ միայն: Ամէն ինչ ուտողը թող չարհամարհէ չուտողը, իսկ չուտողըթող չքննադատէ ուտողը, որովհետեւ Աստուած զայն ընդուներ է: Ո՞վ ես դուն, որ Աստուծոյ ծառանկը դատես: Տէրը ի՛նք միայն գիտէ՝ իր հաւատքին մէջ կանգո՞ւն է անիկա, թէ ինկած: Բայց վստահ եղէքոր կանգուն պիտի մնայ, որովհետեւ Տէրը կրնայ զայն կանգուն պահել:

Նոյնպէս, ոմանք կը խորհին՝ թէ զԱստուած պաշտելու համար այսինչ օրը աւելի կարեւոր է քան միւսօրը, մինչ ուրիշներու համար բոլոր օրերը նոյնն են: Իւրաքանչիւրը թող իր համոզումը պահէ: Կը բաւէոր թէ՛ յատուկ օր մը փնտռողը եւ թէ՛ օրերու միջեւ խտրութիւն չդնողը երկուքն ալ Տէրը պատուել կըխորհին: Նոյնպէս ալ, թէ՛ ամէն ինչ ուտողը Տէրը կը պատուէ եւ թէ՛ չուտողը, երբ երկուքն ալ Աստուծոյգոհութիւն կը յայտնեն:

Մեզմէ ոեւէ մէկը ինքն իր անձին համար չ’ապրիր, ո՛չ ալ ինքն իրեն համար կը մեռնի: Եթէ կ’ապրինք՝Տիրոջ համար կ’ապրինք, եւ եթէ կը մեռնինք՝ Տիրոջ համար կը մեռնինք, որ կը նշանակէ թէ՝ ըլլա՛յկեանքի եւ ըլլա՛յ մահուան մէջ՝ Տիրոջ կը պատկանինք: Ատոր համար ալ Քրիստոս մեռաւ եւվերակենդանացաւ, որպէսզի Տէրը ըլլայ բոլորին, թէ՛ ապրողներուն եւ թէ՛ մեռածներունհաւասարապէս: Ինչո՞ւ կը դատես ուրեմն եղբայրդ, կամ ինչո՞ւ զայն կ’արհամարհես: Բոլորս ալՔրիստոսի ատեանին դիմաց պիտի կանգնինք, որովհետեւ մարգարէութեան մէջ գրուած է.

«Ես ինձմով կ’երդնում,- կ’ըսէ Տէրը,-

որ ամէն ծունկ պիտի խոնարհի առջեւս

եւ ամէն լեզու պիտի խոստովանի

թէ ես եմ Աստուածը»:

Քանի ուրեմն մեզմէ իւրաքանչիւրը իր անձին համար հաշիւ պիտի տայ Աստուծոյ, այսուհետեւդադրի՛նք իրար քննադատելէ, եւ փոխարէնը ջանանք մեր եղբայրներուն գայթակղութեան եւմեղանչումին պատճառ չդառնալ:

Յիսուս Քրիստոսով հետեւեալը ապահովապէս գիտեմ, թէ ինքնին պիղծ բան չկայ: Բան մը պիղծկ’ըլլայ ա՛յն մարդուն համար, որ զայն պիղծ կը համարէ: Եթէ գիտես թէ քու ուտելովդ եղբօրդխղճմտանքը կը վիրա­ւորես, սիրով շարժած չես ըլլար՝ երբ ուտես: Քու կերակուրովդ պատճառ մի՛դառնար որ կորսուի եղբայրդ, որուն համար Քրիստոս իր կեանքը տուաւ: Առիթ մի՛ տար որ բարի եւուղիղ սեպած բանդ հայհոյութեան պատճառ դառնայ: Որովհետեւ Աստուծոյ արքայութիւնըկերակուր կամ ըմպելիք չէ, այլ՝ արդարութիւն, խաղաղութիւն եւ խնդութիւն՝ Սուրբ Հոգիէն տրուած: Եւով որ ասոնցմով կը ծառայէ Քրիստոսի, անիկա Աստուծոյ հաճելի եւ մարդոց գովելի կ’ըլլայ:

Արդ, այսուհետեւ խաղաղութիւն փնտռենք եւ աշխատինք իրարու հաւատքը ամրապնդել: Չըլլա՛յ որկերակուրի պատճառով Աստուծոյ գործը քանդես: Ամէն բան ինքնին մաքուր է. բայց սխալ է բան մըուտել, երբ ատիկա ուրիշ մը կը գայթակղեցնէ: Աւելի ճիշդ է՝ ո՛չ միս ուտել, ո՛չ գինի խմել, ո՛չ ալ ուրիշոեւէ բան ընել՝ որով եղբայրդ կը գլորի կամ կը գայթակղի կամ կը տկարանայ: Այս մասին քուհամոզումդ՝ քու եւ Աստուծոյ միջեւ թող մնայ: Երանի՜ անոր որ ինքզինքը դատապարտութեանչ’ենթարկեր այնպիսի բաներով՝ որով իր ընկերոջ փորձութեան պատճառ կ’ըլլայ: Միւս կողմէ, եթէմէկը կասկած ունի իր կերածին անմաքրութեան մասին, Աստուծոյ դատապարտութեան ենթակայ է՝եթէ ուտէ, որովհետեւ իր արարքը հա­ւատքի արդիւնք չէ: Եւ ինչ որ հաւատքէն չի գար՝ մեղք է:

Matthew 6:1-21 

“Beware of practicing your piety before men in order to be seen by them; for then you will have no reward from your Father who is in heaven. 

“Thus, when you give alms, sound no trumpet before you, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may be praised by men. Truly, I say to you, they have their reward. But when you give alms, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, so that your alms may be in secret; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you. But when you give alms, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, so that your alms may be in secret; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you. 

“And when you pray, you must not be like the hypocrites; for they love to stand and pray in the synagogues and at the street corners, that they may be seen by men. Truly, I say to you, they have their reward. But when you pray, go into your room and shut the door and pray to your Father who is in secret; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you. 

“And in praying do not heap up empty phrases as the Gentiles do; for they think that they will be heard for their many words. Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him. Pray then like this: 

“Our Father who art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors; And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. 

“For if you forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father also will forgive you; but if you do not forgive men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses. 

“And when you fast, do not look dismal, like the hypocrites, for they disfigure their faces that their fasting may be seen by men. Truly, I say to you, they have their reward. But when you fast, anoint your head and wash your face, that your fasting may not be seen by men but by your Father who is in secret; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you. 

“Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust consume and where thieves break in and steal, but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust consumes and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.” 

Romans 13:11-14:23 

Besides this, you know what time it is, how it is now the moment for you to wake from sleep. For salvation is nearer to us now than when we became believers; the night is far gone, the day is near. Let us then lay aside the works of darkness and put on the armor of light; let us live honorably as in the day, not in reveling and drunkenness, not in debauchery and licentiousness, not in quarreling and jealousy. Instead, put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, to gratify its desires. 

Welcome those who are weak in faith, but not for the purpose of quarreling over opinions. Some believe in eating anything, while the weak eat only vegetables. Those who eat must not despise those who abstain, and those who abstain must not pass judgment on those who eat; for God has welcomed them. Who are you to pass judgment on servants of another? It is before their own lord that they stand or fall. And they will be upheld, for the Lord is able to make them stand. 

Some judge one day to be better than another, while others judge all days to be alike. Let all be fully convinced in their own minds. Those who observe the day, observe it in honor of the Lord. Also those who eat, eat in honor of the Lord, since they give thanks to God; while those who abstain, abstain in honor of the Lord and give thanks to God. 

We do not live to ourselves, and we do not die to ourselves. If we live, we live to the Lord, and if we die, we die to the Lord; so then, whether we live or whether we die, we are the Lord’s. For to this end Christ died and lived again, so that he might be Lord of both the dead and the living. 

Why do you pass judgment on your brother or sister? Or you, why do you despise your brother or sister? For we will all stand before the judgment seat of God. For it is written, “As I live, says the Lord, every knee shall bow to me, and every tongue shall give praise to God.” So, then, each of us will be accountable to God. 

Let us therefore no longer pass judgment on one another, but resolve instead never to put a stumbling block on hindrance in the way of another. I know and am persuaded in the Lord Jesus that nothing is unclean in itself; but it is unclean for anyone who thinks it unclean. If your brother or sister is being injured by what you eat, you are no longer walking in love. Do not let what you eat cause the ruin of one for whom Christ died. So do not let your good be spoken of as evil. For the kingdom of God is not food and drink but righteousness and peace and joy in the Holy Spirit. The one who thus serves Christ is acceptable to God and has human approval. Let us then pursue what makes for peace and for mutual upbuilding. Do not, for the sake of food, destroy the work of God. Everything is indeed clean, but it is wrong for you to make others fall by what you eat; it is good not to eat meat or drink wine or do anything that makes your brother or sister stumble. The faith that you have, have as your own conviction before God. Blessed are those who have no reason to condemn themselves because of what they approve. For those who have doubts are condemned if they eat, because they do not act from faith; for whatever does not proceed from faith is sin.
