“PEACE TO YOU ALL”

The message of peace should always flow from the lips of a clergyman. These two most meaningful words convey to us God’s love and wisdom, and the spirit of solidarity; they are an invitation to love our brothers and sisters.

In the life of this world, there are temptations that appear from time to time, which cause upheavals in a person’s individual and collective life. Love is the best path that leads to peace, which is nothing else but an invitation for forgiveness through Divine grace.

As a servant of Christ’s church, I am truly convinced that every time I utter these divine words, “Peace to you all,” I also keep an eye on my own life of faith, to make it complete as much as possible.

The church and her servants are duty-bound to preach peace unceasingly, so that the words we utter convey only blessings, love and solidarity. Our nation has a long way to go in order to live the Christian faith fully and to fortify true unity, which is only possible through our unity in Christ.

Therefore, let us believe in this miracle.

Title: "The Divine Light of Holy Echmiadzin: A Testament of Faith and Unity".

English Summary of Father Haroutioun Tachejian's sermon delivered on Sunday, June 2, 2024 at St. James.

Beloved brothers and sisters in Christ,

Today, we gather to celebrate the Feast of the Mother See of Holy Echmiadzin, a cornerstone of our Armenian Christian heritage. This sacred feast is not just a commemoration of a physical location, but a celebration of our spiritual foundation, our unity in Christ, and the enduring faith of the Armenian people.

Holy Echmiadzin, founded in the early 4th century by St. Gregory the Illuminator, stands as a testament to the divine vision and providence. St. Gregory, after converting King Tiridates III and the Armenian nation to Christianity, had a vision where Christ descended from heaven and struck the ground with a golden hammer, indicating the site where the cathedral should be built. This sacred place thus became the first cathedral in the world and the spiritual center of Armenian Christianity.

St. John Chrysostom once said, "The Church is the pillar and ground of the truth." Holy Echmiadzin embodies this truth, being the bedrock of our faith, the seat of the Catholicos, and a symbol of our unity. It is where the heart of Armenian Christianity beats, reminding us of our roots and our commitment to live out the Gospel in our lives.

The significance of Holy Echmiadzin goes beyond its historical and architectural grandeur. It is a living symbol of our faith, perseverance, and continuity. It has withstood invasions, earthquakes, and political turmoil, yet it remains a steadfast witness to the power of God's providence.

The Mother See is not merely a relic of the past but a living, breathing entity that continues to guide and inspire. It is the cradle of our liturgical life, where the rich traditions of Armenian Christianity are preserved and practiced. It is from this sacred center that the light of Christ spreads throughout the world, through our churches and communities, touching lives and transforming hearts.

St. Gregory of Nyssa eloquently stated, "The church is the image of heaven," and indeed, Holy Echmiadzin, with its serene beauty and spiritual ambiance, lifts our hearts towards the heavenly. It reminds us that we are part of a larger, divine reality, that our earthly struggles and triumphs are but a foretaste of the eternal joy and peace that awaits us in God's kingdom.

As we celebrate this feast, let us reflect on the legacy of Holy Echmiadzin and its significance in our lives. Let us remember the words of our Lord Jesus Christ, "You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden" (Matthew 5:14). Holy Echmiadzin is that city on a hill for us Armenians, a light that cannot be hidden, guiding us towards the fullness of life in Christ.

Beloved, let us carry the light of Holy Echmiadzin in our hearts, drawing strength from its history, and its ongoing mission. May it inspire us to be true disciples of Christ, bearing witness to His love and truth in our daily lives. And may the Mother See of Holy Echmiadzin continue to be a source of blessing and inspiration for all Armenians and for the whole world. Amen.

Romans 6:12-23

Therefore, do not let sin exercise dominion in your mortal bodies, to make you obey their passions. No longer present your members to sin as instruments of wickedness, but present yourselves to God as those who have been brought from death to life, and present your members to God as instruments of righteousness. For sin will have no dominion over you, since you are not under law but under grace.

What then? Should we sin because we are not under law but under grace? By no means! Do you not know that if you present yourselves to anyone as obedient slaves, you are slaves of the one whom you obey, either of sin, which leads to death, or of obedience, which leads to righteousness? But thanks be to God that you, having once been slaves of sin, have become obedient from the heart to the form of teaching to which you were entrusted, and that you, having been set free from sin, have become slaves of righteousness. I am speaking in human terms because of your natural limitations. For just as you once presented your members as slaves to impurity and to greater and greater iniquity, so now present your members as slaves to righteousness for sanctification.

When you were slaves of sin, you were free in regard to righteousness. So what advantage did you then get from the things of which you now are ashamed? The end of those things is death. But now that you have been freed from sin and enslaved to God, the advantage you get is sanctification. The end is eternal life. For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Matthew 12:1-8

At that time Jesus went through the grain fields on the Sabbath; his disciples were hungry, and they began to pluck heads of grain and to eat. When the Pharisees saw it, they said to him, “Look, your disciples are doing what is not lawful to do on the Sabbath.” He said to them, “Have you not read what David did when he and his companions were hungry? He entered the house of God and ate the bread of the Presence, which it was not lawful for him or his companions to eat, but only for the priests. Or have you not read in the law that on the Sabbath the priests in the temple break the Sabbath and yet are guiltless? I tell you, something greater than the temple is here. But if you had known what this means, ‘I desire mercy and not sacrifice,’ you would not have condemned the guiltless. For the Son of Man is lord of the Sabbath.”
