Title: "Embodying the Divine Motherhood: Honoring Our Mothers on Mother's Day".

English Summary of Father Haroutioun Tachejian's sermon delivered on Sunday, May 12, 2024 at St. James.

Dear parishioners,

As we gather in the warmth of our St. James church on this sacred occasion of Mother's Day, we are blessed with the opportunity to reflect upon and honor the remarkable women who grace our lives with their love, wisdom, and unwavering devotion. Today, we pay tribute to the exemplary mothers of our parish, whose nurturing spirit echoes the timeless love and sacrifice exemplified by the Holy Mother, Virgin Mary.

In the heart of our congregation, we are fortunate to witness the embodiment of maternal love in action. Our mothers, the bedrock of our families and the pillars of our community, exemplify the virtues of selflessness, compassion, and faith. They not only raise their children with tender care but also instill in them the values of faith, integrity, and service to others. Their dedication to bringing their children to Sunday school, encouraging their teenagers and grandchildren to actively participate in our church Youth Group ACYO, and their steadfast involvement in the Ladies Society organization, is a testament to their profound commitment to nurturing the spiritual and the Armenian cultural growth of our community.

Today, at the end of the Divine Liturgy we will fondly remember and honor our departed mothers, we will also extend our deepest gratitude to all mothers present among us, whose love knows no bounds and whose sacrifices often go unnoticed. Let us cherish the memories of those who have gone before us, recognizing their enduring legacy of faith and love that continues to inspire us each day.

In celebrating the essence of motherhood, we are called to reflect upon the extraordinary life of the Holy Mother of God, Virgin Mary. Like a guiding light, she embodies the highest expression of maternal love, having raised the Son of God with unparalleled devotion and sacrificial care. Her unwavering faith, humility, and obedience serve as a beacon of hope and inspiration for all mothers, guiding them in their journey of nurturing and guiding their children in the ways of the Lord.

The words of Mother Teresa resonate deeply with the selfless devotion and compassion exemplified by mothers, as she reminds us, "It is not how much we do, but how much love we put in the doing. It is not how much we give, but how much love we put in the giving." In the countless acts of service and sacrifice, mothers pour forth their love unconditionally, leaving a lasting impression on the hearts of their children and the world around them.

On this blessed day, let us honor and celebrate the remarkable women in our lives, whose love knows no bounds and whose grace illuminates our path. May we continue to cherish and uphold the sacred bond of motherhood, drawing inspiration from the Holy Mother, St. Mary, and the countless mothers who have left a lasting impact on our hearts and souls.

"Heavenly Father, we thank you for the precious gift of motherhood, for the selfless love and devotion of our mothers. Bless our mothers and our spouses the mothers of our children, and grant them strength, wisdom, and grace as they continue to nurture and guide us in your ways. May we, as a community, honor and cherish the invaluable role of motherhood, reflecting the love and compassion of the Holy Mother of God, St. Mary, now and always. Amen."

May God's abundant blessings be upon our mothers today and always.

John 14:25-31

“I have said these things to you while I am still with you. But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you everything, and remind you of all that I have said to you. Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled, and do not let them be afraid. You heard me say to you, ‘I am going away, and I am coming to you.’ If you loved me, you would rejoice that I am going to the Father, because the Father is greater than I. And now I have told you this before it occurs, so that when it does occur, you may believe. I will no longer talk much with you, for the ruler of this world is coming. He has no power over me; but I do as the Father has commanded me, so that the world may know that I love the Father. Rise, let us be on our way.

Acts 2:1-21

When the day of Pentecost had come, they were all together in one place. And suddenly from heaven there came a sound like the rush of a violent wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. Divided tongues, as of fire, appeared among them, and a tongue rested on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other languages, as the Spirit gave them ability.

Now there were devout Jews from every nation under heaven living in Jerusalem. And at this sound the crowd gathered and was bewildered, because each one heard them speaking in the native language of each. Amazed and astonished, they asked, “Are not all these who are speaking Galileans? And how is it that we hear, each of us, in our own native language? Parthians, Medes, Elamites, and residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya belonging to Cyrene, and visitors from Rome, both Jews and proselytes, Cretans and Arabs—in our own languages we hear them speaking about God’s deeds of power.” All were amazed and perplexed, saying to one another, “What does this mean?” But others sneered and said, “They are filled with new wine.”

But Peter, standing with the eleven, raised his voice and addressed them, “Men of Judea and all who live in Jerusalem, let this be known to you, and listen to what I say. Indeed, these are not drunk, as you suppose, for it is only nine o’clock in the morning. No, this is what was spoken through the prophet Joel: ‘In the last days it will be, God declares, and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams. Even upon my slaves, both men and women, in those days I will pour out my Spirit; and they shall prophesy. And I will show portents in the heaven above and signs on the earth below, blood, and fire, and smoky mist. The sun shall be turned to darkness and the moon to blood, before the coming of the Lord’s great and glorious day. Then everyone who calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved.’”
