Family Fun With A Purpose:

Turning Hurricane Preparedness into a Child-Friendly Activity

Preparing for hurricane season doesn’t have to feel stressful, overwhelming or scary. With a little creativity, families can turn preparedness into fun activities that help everyone feel ready for hurricane season. By involving your child in age-appropriate ways, you can build safety skills while spending quality time together.

Start with a family emergency kit scavenger hunt. Take a look at the disaster supply kit checklist at https://www.floridadisaster.org/globalassets/plan--prepare/disaster-supply-checklist.pdf to see what you will need. Set a timer and have family members help gather items from the list such as flashlights, batteries, water bottles, non-perishable snacks, first aid kit and comfort items like books or games from around the house. Younger children can help decorate the emergency kit container with stickers and labels. This activity will help your child understand why supplies are important, while giving them a sense of responsibility.

Create a simple map of your home and neighborhood and practice evacuation routes or safe places to go during a storm. Role-playing different scenarios like “what to do if the power goes out” will help your child remember important steps without feeling afraid. Keep your tone calm and reassuring, emphasizing that planning helps keep everyone safe.

Families can also enjoy weather themed learning activities by watching a kid-friendly video about hurricanes, reading a picture book about storms, or completing a simple science experiment. Try creating a mini hurricane in a bowl by stirring water in a circular motion while dropping food coloring into the center to show the swirling motion. Follow up with a discussion about how people prepare for severe weather and how first responders help them recover if they need assistance.

Finally, you can end the day with a hurricane preparedness celebration! Once your kit is complete and your plan is practiced, enjoy a family game night or special snack to highlight that being prepared is a positive accomplishment. These small activities can help your child associate emergency preparedness with confidence and teamwork rather than fear.

By turning hurricane preparedness into family fun, parents can teach important safety lessons while strengthening family bonds long before the storm clouds appear.

UPPER SCHOOL

Continued Education During Summer

Summer often brings a welcome change of pace: family vacations, later mornings, camp schedules, and well-earned downtime after a busy school year. While this season is an important time for rest, exploration, and making memories, it is also a critical opportunity for students to continue learning, growing, and building confidence. Research consistently shows that students who stay academically engaged over the summer are better prepared to transition into the next school year, retain more of what they’ve learned, and often return to the classroom with stronger skills and renewed motivation.

The summer months provide a unique chance to strengthen foundational skills, close learning gaps, and explore subjects in a way that feels less pressured than during the school year. Whether a student needs extra support in reading, writing, math, science, test preparation, executive functioning, or enrichment in advanced coursework, individualized tutoring can make a meaningful difference. Even just a few hours each week of intentional academic engagement can help prevent “summer slide” while building momentum for long-term success.

Summer learning is not simply about keeping up—it’s about moving forward. It’s a time for students to ask questions, build confidence in challenging subjects, develop stronger study habits, and discover new strengths.

Personalized tutoring allows students to work at their own pace, receive one-on-one support, and focus on the areas where they can grow the most. For many students, summer becomes the perfect environment to gain the confidence and skills that carry into the entire academic year.

We are excited to offer a talented team of dedicated tutors this summer, each bringing unique expertise, experience, and a passion for helping students succeed. Whether your student is preparing for upcoming coursework, reviewing essential concepts, tackling advanced material, or simply looking to stay academically sharp, our tutors are here to provide personalized support every step of the way.

We invite you to take a look at our outstanding tutors available this summer and find the right fit for your student’s goals. Investing in learning during the summer is an investment in confidence, growth, and future success, and there is no better time to start.

🥩 HEALTH TIP: WHY PROTEIN MATTERS FOR METABOLISM & FAT LOSS

Protein is one of the most powerful nutrients when it comes to energy, metabolism, and body composition.

Here’s why it matters:

• Boosts metabolism – Your body burns more calories digesting protein than carbs or fats.

• Supports fat loss – Higher protein intake helps maintain lean muscle while reducing body fat.

• Keeps you fuller longer – Protein helps control appetite and prevents overeating.

• Builds and repairs muscle – Essential for athletes, growing kids, and active adults.

Simple ways to increase protein intake:

✔ Eggs or Greek yogurt for breakfast

✔ Chicken, fish, or lean beef at meals

✔ Protein smoothies after training

✔ Nuts, cottage cheese, or protein bars for snacks

A good general target for active individuals is about 0.7–1 gram of protein per pound of body weight per day to support performance, metabolism, and recovery.

Strong bodies are built through smart training and smart nutrition.
