Fueling Success: The Power of a Healthy Snack & Lunch

A healthy snack or lunch is more than just food—it’s fuel for your child’s success. Nutritious choices help children focus, learn, and play, giving them the energy and brain power to thrive in school. By packing balanced lunches, you’re setting the stage for a day full of learning and growth.

Easy, Healthy Lunch Ideas

1. The Rainbow Lunch

  •  Colorful fruits & veggies: strawberries, bell peppers, cucumbers, blueberries, grapes
  • Turkey & cheese wrap or hummus sandwich on whole-grain bread

2. DIY Lunchables

  • Whole grain crackers
  • Sliced cheese and lean deli meat
  • Apple slices and yogurt
  • Baby carrots or mini pickles

3. Bento Box Variety

  • Mini sandwich squares or pinwheels
  • Yogurt or cottage cheese
  • Sliced fruit
  • A small treat (dark chocolate chip or animal cracker)

4. Breakfast for Lunch

  • Mini whole grain waffles or pancakes
  • Hard-boiled egg
  • Banana slices or applesauce
  • A sprinkle of granola or dry cereal

5. Snack-Style Lunch

  • Cheese cubes
  • Whole-grain pretzels or pita chips
  • Cherry tomatoes or cucumbers
  • Fruit cup or dried fruit
  • Protein bar

Lunchbox Tips for Success

  • Keep it simple: Pack foods your child already enjoys.
  • Make it fun: Use cookie cutters for sandwiches or add a special note.
  • Stay safe: Use an insulated lunchbox with an ice pack.
  • Get them involved: Let your child help pack their lunch—it builds independence and excitement.

Testing

Next week, we will begin administering our first Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) assessments of the year. Students in Kindergarten through 5th grade will be tested in reading and math throughout September.

The MAP test helps identify strengths, growth areas, and guides instruction. Parents will receive results during October conferences. To help your child prepare, ensure they get a good night’s sleep and a healthy breakfast.

Please contact your child’s teacher for specific dates and times. For questions, reach out to Mrs. Danielle.

Note: The MAP test is an approved Step Up For Students assessment, ensuring compliance.

PBL Showcase

This month, each class will research key events from a specific era (1900s–1990s) for our Project-Based Learning unit. The showcase will culminate in the Eras Decades Bash on September 26.

Students are encouraged to dress in attire that reflects their decade or present an alternative project such as a poster or artifact. Parents are invited to attend, learn about the eras, and enjoy the class presentations.

More details will be shared via Procare and email. We look forward to celebrating our students’ creativity and learning!

Eat the Rainbow at Collage Day School

This year, our Lower School is launching an exciting Eat the Rainbow program! Students will explore fruits and vegetables by color each month—starting with orange foods in September.

Week 1: Mandarins & Oranges 🍊

  • Nutrient Spotlight: Full of vitamin C , fiber , and antioxidants.
  • Health Benefits: Boosts immunity, supports healing, promotes healthy skin.
  • Kid-Friendly Tip: Pack easy-peel mandarins in lunchboxes or mix oranges into a fruit salad.

We encourage families to join in at home - let's make healthy eating fun and colorful!
