Earth Guild Update
by Brenda Lloyd
The past two years have put many Earth Guild activities on a back burner as Epiphany has dealt with the effects of COVID-19. Now, the outlook is improving and we want to revive the wonderful group that has strived to be a good steward of the environment. There is still so much good and meaningful work to do!

The Earth Guild first began its good work in 2004. Our mission is to serve God’s earthly creation and the Epiphany community as we explore the intersections of faith, food, and fun and practice a reverent stewardship of the earth’s resources to be more sustainable for current and future life.

With help and guidance from Georgia Interfaith Power and Light (GIPL), the Earth Guild provided many activities for Epiphanites to engage in earth stewardship. I want to name just a few of those of activities:

  • Various cleanups, including a section of the South River and a street cleanup from Epiphany to the East Lake MARTA station.
  • Apple gleaning in north Georgia with the apples going to a food bank.
  • A geological tour of Stone Mountain with Epiphany member and professor of geology Pam Gore as our guide.
  • Several hikes around town and in north Georgia–and even an adventure in Canyon de Chelly in Navajoland.
  • A visit to Phillip Ranglin’s home, where he lives off the grid.

We celebrated Earth Day with speakers, including Ranglin, who is an environmental microbiologist. And we celebrated the feast day of Hildegard von Bingen. In November of 2017 the Earth Guild was central to organizing the Stewardship dinner, bringing in John Lanier of Project Drawdown, a nonprofit organization that seeks to “draw down” greenhouse gasses.

Several years ago, GIPL even awarded Epiphany its GIPPY award for environmental stewardship and performed an audit of Epiphany to help us make good environmental choices.

In the years to come, we really want the good work around environmental justice to continue at Epiphany. Now that Megan Swett has transitioned into being a full-time seminarian, we are also looking for some new leadership. If you are interested in joining the Earth Guild, rejoining the Earth Guild, or offering some leadership as we consider the Earth Guild’s future, please email me Brenda Lloyd, or the Rev. Nicole Lambelet. Come join us! There is still so much good and meaningful work to do!
