Celebrating Christen

We have been blessed for the last year by the ministry of Christen Erskine as our Interim Director of Children's Ministry. Christen's time with us has come to an end as she begins a new way of living out her calling, pursuing an M.Ed./Ed.S. in School Psychology at Georgia State. We are so grateful for her ministry among us and grateful that she and Kurt will remain members here at Epiphany. We will celebrate her ministry with a reception on Sunday, July 25 at 10:30 a.m. in the courtyard. Please come and honor the many gifts Christen has shared with us over the last year. |

Each month we highlight a different ministry at Epiphany and give thanks for the way they contribute to the life of our community. This month we offer our gratitude for the work of the Safely Together Task Force.
In March 2020, the pandemic forced some rapid changes in the way we functioned as a church. We moved our worship services online, we offered virtual coffee hours, formation, committee meetings, and daily Morning Prayer services on Zoom. We got creative about how we could stay connected to each other while we were apart.
The Safely Together Task Force met all along the way, helping us discern new ways of being church, and holding up safe pandemic practices as a way of respecting the dignity of every human being. We give thanks for the work of our task force members: Katy Bassett, Bert Bender, Shelle Bryant, Lisa Carlson, Ann Fowler, Richard Messner, and Nancy Thompson.

Indoor Eucharist - Registration Required
To allow for social distancing, there will be a limit of 75 people in the congregation. Registration is required.
Masks should be worn by all during worship. Fully vaccinated clergy, lay worship leaders, choir, and lectors may go without a mask while actively leading worship. There will be singing by the choir and the congregation. Communion remains in one kind (bread only).

Tuesday Men's Breakfast at 7 a.m.
Each Tuesday morning, we begin at 7 a.m. in the chapel with Morning Prayer (Holy Eucharist 1st Tuesdays), and end our time together with a simple breakfast and fellowship. If you would like to learn more, or have any interest in helping provide food for Men's Breakfast, please email John Yntema.

Wednesday Noonday Prayer & Eucharist
In the nave
Noonday Prayer takes place at 12 p.m. in the side chapel. Healing with Eucharist follows at 12:15 p.m. Bulletins and Prayer Books provided.

Altar Arrangements and the Sanctuary Light
The Altar Arrangements and the Sanctuary Light can be given in honor of an anniversary, birthday or in memory of a loved one.
|
|
The Arrangements at the Altar for this Sunday are given to the Glory of God and in thanksgiving for their wedding anniversary, by Michele & Rod MacLeod.
The color and selection of flowers is based on the appropriateness of the liturgical season. However, you may request a particular flower or color be used on the signup. Suggested donation is $75.

The Sanctuary Light is given this week to the Glory of God and in memory of Kenn Salmon on his birthday, by Ellen Mintzmyer.
The light is a visible sign of the presence of the Blessed Sacrament held in reserve in the Tabernacle and burns for seven days. Suggested donation is $6.

Godly Play® Workshop
St. Luke's Episcopal Church
Wednesdays, August 4 and August 11
6 – 9 p.m.
Explore some of the key elements of the Godly Play method led by Godly Play Foundation Trainer, Christen Erskine. Godly Play teaches children the art of using Christian language - parable, sacred story, silence and liturgical action - helping them become more fully aware of the mystery of God’s presence in their lives. This 2-session workshop is designed for those being introduced to Godly Play, experienced storytellers and doorpeople, and those who are curious. Email Christen Erskine to register.

In-Person Evening Prayer
Evening Prayer is held on Sundays from 5-6 p.m. The first half is dedicated to games and social time, while the second is set aside for prayer and formation.
NOTE: Evening Prayer is on a two-week hiatus and will resume on August 8.

Neighbors Small Group

Sunday Morning Formation Hour
Sunday Morning Formation Hour resumes at 10:15 a.m. and will be offered in-person and on Zoom. The three-week series on Islam will be led by our own Dr. Jim Hoesterey, Emory Professor of Religion and Dr. Deanna Associate Professor of History of Religions and Interfaith Studies at Candler School of Theology. This series will be an important starting point for our community as we look forward to partnering with the Ismaili Community in Decatur later this fall. Youth are also welcome to attend! Grab-N-Go Meal Packs
July—Help our neighbors at Emmaus House with easy Grab-N-Go Weekend Meal Packs. In a gallon Ziploc bag, include non-perishable food items to feed one person 2 breakfasts, 2 lunches, 2 dinners (think protein) and a healthy snack or two. You can add an inspirational note or Scripture, too. Please place in the bins in the gallery.

Grounds Group & Building Bloc |
We have reopened and you are invited to visit https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/EpiphanyGrounds and take the survey there to share ideas about what we might do with respect to our space, and how you might be willing to help – with ideas, labor or both. We benefit from the ideas and efforts of volunteers who contribute to care for our grounds and keep our building in good shape – and we want to put together teams for planning and doing grounds and buildings projects by individuals, families, and small or large groups. Among the ideas contributed that the Grounds Group may roll out more completely are:
- Adoption of (regular caring for) small parts of flower beds.
- Brush cleanup of Byrdland and other areas.
- Mulch and pine straw spreading.
- When planting time is right, further planting of shrubbery and trees.
- Wanted! Invasive species removal.
- Erosion control projects.
- Are there others? (Yes. There are … )

The Feeding Ministry Returns to Gateway |
|
We will return to the Gateway shelter this month for the first time since a year ago February. They are using strict COVID protocols. You can opt to help cook from 2-5 p.m., serve from 5-7 p.m. or help clean up after the volunteer dinner at 7 p.m. Email Jeanette Hanson with any questions.

KANUGA IS OPEN AGAIN and our Epiphany Retreat is a GO! We’ve got our traditional fall weekend reserved for October 22-24 and premium cabins as well as a few rooms at the Inn. Some things will be different this year – we’re preparing to 're-Imagine' the weekend retreat for a post-pandemic era! So, mark your calendars for October 22-24, consider joining the Kanuga Committee to help us ‘re-Imagine’ the retreat, and check back for more information in the coming months. Harvey Fund Grant Application
The Catherine D. Harvey Legacy Fund grant application cycle for the Summer term is now open. If you are aware of an organization that might qualify, please share the application.

Because of the uncertainties of the next year, Education for Ministry (EFM) will meet on Zoom for the 2021-22 school year. This makes it a great opportunity to get to know people outside of our usual geography and ways of thinking, and perhaps even some people from other countries! EFM is a four-year extension program of the School of Theology of the University of the South. It is partly academic readings, but the heart of EFM is theological reflection, or “TR.“ In a TR, participants discuss issues of faith, what they believe, what they question, how it relates to their everyday lives, and how they keep faith alive. Students sign up one year at a time for this four-year program. The cost of the program is $350 per year. The meetings will be held from early September through May. The staff continues to work mostly from home. They check their email and voicemail messages regularly.
Door Codes: The door codes have been changed. If you are part of a group or ministry that has returned to meeting in person and do not yet have a new code, email the parish office. Please do not share your code with anyone. Refer them to the office so they can be given the correct code for their area of ministry.
Pastoral Emergencies: Please call the church at 404.373.8338 and leave a message for Amy (ext. 14) or Nicole (ext. 16). They receive message alerts and will return your call.

The Daughters of the King (DOK) meet online on 4th Sundays at 2 p.m. The DOK is open to all women in the parish interested in fellowship and study. Email Barbara Ryder if you would like to receive the Zoom link each month.

Racial Justice Group meets 2nd Tuesdays
The Racial Justice Group (RJG) meets 2nd Tuesdays at 7 p.m. Called by our baptismal covenant to strive for justice and peace among all people and to respect the dignity of every human being, the RJG is focused on lifelong learning and action steps we can take as individuals and as a church community to help achieve racial equity and justice. Racial Justice Book Study Group meets 4th Wednesdays.
You are invited to join Epiphany’s Racial Justice Book Study group on the last Wednesday of the month from 6:45 - 8 p.m.
July 28: You are Your Best Thing: Vulnerability, Shame Resilience, and the Black Experience by Tarana Burke and Brene Brown.
August 25: Walking With The Wind: A Memoir of the Movement by John Lewis.
The purposes of our Book Study are to:
- educate and inform ourselves on the history of racial injustice
- better understand the challenges of changing racial inequities and seeking racial justice, and
- work toward pragmatic and effective ways to be better anti-racist advocates.

Grief Pastoral Care Group meets 1st Thursdays
The Grief Pastoral Care Group meets online 1st Thursdays at noon for a healing and faith based conversation around grief and loss. Led by parishioners Megan Fraijo-Paul and Nancy Thompson, both trained psychotherapists. Email Megan or Nancy for more information.

Flex & Stretch and Chair Yoga
The Flex & Stretch class—which is the basic SilverSneakers class—meets online on Fridays and the Chair Yoga program meets on Tuesdays and Thursdays. All at 11 a.m. Email Ellen Mintzmeyer for the Zoom link.
