Pius XI Family Newsletter | May 1, 2024 |
Heavenly Father, we come before You this morning with a heart full of gratitude for the gift of another day. As the sun rises, let our spirits rise in worship and adoration of You. You are our rock, fortress, and deliverer. In You, we place our trust as we start this day. We ask for Your Holy Spirit to fill us anew, that our faith may be strengthened and our walk with You deepened. Guide us in Your truth. Psalm 25:4-5 “Show me Your ways, Lord, teach me Your paths. Guide me in Your truth and teach me, for You are God my Savior, and my hope is in You all day long.” Open our hearts to understand Your Word and Your will for our lives more clearly. Help us to see the opportunities You provide to express faith in action. Amen.

Padres y Guardianes,

Assistant Principal's Updates and Resources
Greetings!
The University of Wisconsin – Whitewater’s STEM Boot Camp is now accepting applications for the summer 2024 program. Student are eligible for the 2024 SBC summer program if they:
- Are applying to UWW for the 2024-25 academic year. Students can still be undecided about their college choice when applying to SBC, but must be enrolled in fall classes at UWW to participate.
-
Are interested in pursuing a STEM major, although students don’t have to know what major they want to declare. UWW offers strong undergraduate programs in biology, computer science, environmental sciences, chemistry, mathematics and more, and we are happy to help students find their STEM fit.
-
Have social, educational, and/or economic barriers to STEM career paths. Students are able to describe these barriers briefly in the application, and can include factors like being a first-generation college student, lack of representation in STEM, facing economic challenges that put additional pressures on pursuing a college degree, etc. We also welcome students with a range of academic histories. We accept students who have strong academic histories and want to build additional skills and experiences entering college as well as those whose transcripts don’t represent their growth or potential.
Interested students should apply at https://www.uww.edu/cls/stem-boot-camp
New this week…
Employment Opportunities
-
Cedar Crest Ice Cream is hiring for the festival season. They offer flexible scheduling and entry to the summer festivals. Click HERE for details.
- Miron Construction offers a youth apprenticeship program. Students start in the summer and can work up to full time hours. Starting rate is $14 per hour and work begins in early June. Once school starts in the fall, students work at least 3 hours on the jobsite during the school day. Interested students should email Mrs. Brown.
Reminders…
Star Testing - Students in 9-11th grades will test tomorrow, Thursday, May 2nd. Please make sure your child has a good night’s rest, eats breakfast or a snack, and arrives at school on time. We use this screener as one data point to help us identify students who may need academic support. Seniors should report to the Fieldhouse on time at 7:45 am where they will participate in another activity that morning.
AP Exams will be administered May 6-17th. The schedule and other testing information can be found HERE. Practice sessions are now available on both AP Classroom and YouTube.
Blessings,
LaKendra Brown

May is Mental Health Awareness Month!
According to the CDC:
- More than half of all Wisconsin high school students reported significant problems with anxiety in 2021, and more than one-third reported problems with depression during the same time.
- Female students were twice as likely as male students to report problems with depression in 2021.
- Suicide was the second leading cause of death for Wisconsin youth (ages 10-24) in 2020.
REDgen seeks to enhance youth mental wellbeing and prevent crisis by equipping teens with resilience skills, which research shows is a key driver of prevention. Our primary method of reaching youth is through our school-based, peer-to-peer School Chapter program, founded on the belief that youth have the power to make a difference in their own mental well-being and the mental being of their peers.
To bring attention to youth mental health, REDgen is proud to participate in Light the Hoan. On Thursday, May 2, Milwaukee’s Hoan Bridge will be lit up in red lights. (A livestream is available here).

REDgen Student Leaders In Action
Our REDgen student leaders catalyze change in their schools, creating a culture of connection, belonging, and authenticity. They work to learn resilience and emotional regulation skills and share them with peers, creating space for others to be seen and connected
Throughout the school year, our dedicated REDgen student leaders take the lead in organizing school-wide activities focused on resilience skills. Their aim is to share knowledge and help their peers enhance their own mental wellbeing, demonstrating their commitment to the school community.
In April, REDgen student leaders from Pius XI and Tenor Cathedral Square high schools joined University School of Milwaukee students to learn from renowned resilience expert Dr. Kenneth Ginsburg. Several days later, over 80 REDgen student leaders traveled to Madison for a mental health summit, joining youth from 46 schools around the state.
Together, they discussed issues impacting youth anxiety, stress, and depression, and they also learned skills in suicide prevention. We are proud of these students for positively representing REDgen and their respective schools!
| All-School Mental Health Assembly |
On Monday, April 29, our Pius XI REDgen club kicked off Mental Health Awareness Month, to shine a light on mental health, break the stigma around mental health, and talk about the importance of resilience.
From sharing personal stories to offering strategies for self-care, our students sparked important conversations and reminded us all that mental health matters.
