Addressing the Face of Poverty in Lamoille Valley
An Interfaith Easter/Passover Teach-In
At Blessed Sacrament Church + Online
Monday, March 20, 2023
6:30 PM - 8:00 PM
Poverty has always been an issue in Lamoille Valley. During and post-COVID, poverty has grown exponentially with people experiencing severe need due to economic hardship. The local Lamoille faith communities, in partnership with United Way, are creating an Interfaith Benevolence Fund to help support those in need and to play a part in lifting them up from poverty. Come to this event to help support these efforts and to hear the stories of those directly impacted, alongside experts, clergy, and community members who share a vision of basic needs and dignity for all. For thousands of years, people of many faiths have drawn on the stories and songs of Passover and Easter to create a hopeful, actionable future. Learn about the region’s complex issues of poverty and what we can do to help enhance solutions happening now to ensure vibrant, healthy communities where everyone’s needs are met.
Please RSVP to Stowe Community Church, PO Box 991, Stowe VT 05672 or call the office 802-253-7257 Mondays through Fridays 8:30 – 2:30. Thank you.

March Prayer Focus: The Deacons
The position of deacon had its genesis in Acts Chapter 6, when the early church was faced with the possibility of division over the distribution of food among the widows. The twelve apostles of Christ called together the church and asked them to “choose seven…from among you who are known to be full of the Spirit and wisdom” who could be given the responsibility for oversight of this important task, allowing the apostles to give their attention “to prayer and the ministry of the word.” Whether service takes the form of direct service to Pastor Dan or service that ministers to the needs of those in the church and the community, it is intended that the service the deacons provide allows the pastor time for prayerful reflection as he listens for the voice of God for sermons that elevate us all spiritually.
With the need for prayer in mind, the deacons (Theresa Tedstone, Jean Mudgett, Tracy Wall, and Brad Osborne) ask for your prayers during the month of March. Pray that God will guide our service, strengthen us, and present us with opportunities within the church and our community to serve in new ways that we could not previously have imagined. Pray also that God will equip us with the tools to faithfully carry out our calling as those opportunities present themselves. Whether it be the right words to say to someone who is struggling, a strengthened spirit to discern the needs of those who may not feel comfortable sharing, or the time and resources to meet unforeseen needs as our church grows…we ask that you include us in your prayers.

Mission of the Month: Kenyan Orphan Project
The focus this month is on our support of the Nyalwodep Project in Kenya. Our church through the Mission Committee has been sponsoring this project since connecting with this organization through Dr. Jack Bryant and his wife Nancy, Stowe residents and church members in 2005. They were also doing missionary work in Nairobi, Kenya where they met Pastor James Ouma and saw the urgent and pressing needs of his group of widows and orphans from the AIDS epidemic in Africa. The Bryants introduced our congregation to this needy organization and since then we have been sending funds to help with the food, clothing and education of these students. There are currently 75 children and 40 widows cared for at Nyalgunga which is about 60 miles from Nairobi.
Pastor Ouma has visited Stowe Community Church twice, once with his wife Alice who co-founded the Project. We hope to continue to support these vulnerable children and help them out of the throes of poverty by getting an education so they will have a better future.
f you are interested in donating, helping with a student’s education or being part of a mission group to visit Nyalgunga and Pastor Ouma please contact Karen at karen@pma1.net or 802-253-9437.

This week I feature works by Amy Beach who lived from 1867-1944. Beach was born in Henniker, New Hampshire. A child prodigy, she was giving piano recitals and composing music by age 6. Here is her Nunc Dimittis.
Amy Beach was the first American woman to compose and publish a symphony. That symphony was premiered by the Boston Symphony in 1896. Here is another of her choral works, "Bethlehem."
