August 31st is Nearing (Already?!): Things You Need to Know

August 31st is the deadline for current members to indicate their intent to return to Scouting.

Here are some key points for everyone to keep in mind:

  • Parents who had not indicated their response were sent another reminder email yesterday.
  • Groups are doing an AWESOME job touching base with their parents. For more about how important this step is, watch this video.
  • Don't be afraid to call parents to encourage them to respond and indicate their decision. Yes, we all love texting, but hearing a familiar voice can make a world of difference.

After August 31st:

  • This is an opportune time to review your responses as a scouter team and determine where you can have room for new members to take part in the fall session free trial. This decision should be made before September 6th.
  • Set your section capacity in myscouts no later than September 6th.
  • Begin drafting out patrols and adventure teams in preparation for the start of outdoor program. These may be completed after hit capacity.
  • Schedule a parent orientation night to review the standards and procedures with parents.

September 7th: the remaining spots will be available for new participants to register through myscouts.

Check out the FAQ on Preparing for Fall Scouting in the Support Centre for more details.

And: don't forget, you have a whole team here to help you. Please reach out to your GSS or SRM at any time. We're here to support your preparation for fall scouting and to enable great, safe, scouting adventures in Shining Waters Council!

Championing Recognition in SWC:
Message from Council Commissioner, Kit Cheng

Hello Scouters

Thank you for your leadership throughout the current COVID-19 situation. Scouting wouldn't be possible without you.

I recognize there is a lot on your plate already (with the registrations and preparations for the Fall Season) - but there is one thing we will need your help: Recognition.  For Shining Waters, we have a dedicated section on our Council Website on recognition:

Help needed:

If you have a youth who achieved the Top Section Award this year (North Star Award, Seeonee Award, Chief Scout's Award, Queen's Venturer Award, and the Canadian Rover Scout Award) - please make sure you record it in myScouts by August 31, 2020.  GC & GR have the authority in myScouts to add Top Section Award Recognition for their youth. Refer to the link above for the guide (See "resources" section).

Around early September, we will pull a report of all the Top Section Award records in myScouts - and post them on our Council Website Recognition page.  Along with Outstanding Service Awards and Mission Impact, we will send a Council-wide email to congratulate all recipients (it will go to all Scouters, youths, and parents).

To confirm, we know with the situation this year, not all youth had the opportunity to finish all requirements for their Top Section Award - but are in the position to complete in the Fall or when the in-person program resumes. We will update the 2019-20 list continuously during Fall/Winter/as long as required. We will make sure all youths are recognized properly. The August 31 date is meant to be a date we use to pull the 1st version of the report, for the early September email. It's not intended to stop willing youth from finishing their Top Section Award. We will make this fact clear in our congratulation email.

Thanks,

Kit Cheng
