West Melbourne Weekly Roundup

The City has, for years, published a weekly "Friday Memo" to share notable activities from the week and provide information on upcoming events. We love sharing information about the City, however we're trying something new! The traditional "Friday Memo" has transitioned into the West Melbourne Weekly Roundup. We'll continue providing a weekly summary of activities and upcoming events, but in a new, more mobile-friendly format. We hope you enjoy the fresh new look of our weekly publication!

This week in West Melbourne...

Tree Lighting at the Community Park

Tonight’s festivities include the Christmas Tree lighting beginning at 5:00 pm, featuring a festive atmosphere with hot chocolate and cookies. The celebration will be accompanied by local middle school bands, adding a lively musical touch to the evening. To top it off, Santa Claus will be making a special appearance, bringing joy and holiday cheer to the gathering. It promises to be a delightful and memorable event you do not want to miss.

Helen Voltz Selected to Fill

Vacant Council Seat

During a Special Council Meeting on Tuesday, November 14, 2023, City Council interviewed multiple candidates to fill a vacant Council position with an unexpired term ending November 2024. Following the interviews, Council selected Ms. Helen Voltz for the position.

Ms. Voltz brings a wealth of experience to City Council having previously served as a member of the Palm Bay City Council. She has also served two terms on the Board of County Commissioner for Brevard County District 3; which included her twice serving as Board Chairperson.

Ms. Voltz has been a resident of West Melbourne since 2002.

Wickham Road

Watermain Crossing

The Wickham Road Watermain Crossing is nearing completion with restoration of the parking lots taking place at the Metro West and Plaza West Shopping Centers.  This project, once completed, will allow the City’s water lines to be connected from the east side to the west side of Wickham Road.

The City’s last Production Well #4, needed for the new water treatment plant, has reached a depth of 505 feet, well on its way to final depth of 800 feet. Once this well is complete along with the required monitoring wells, the Production and Monitoring Well Project will be complete. The design of the water transmission lines can then move forward, so the City’s new water treatment plant design can be completed.

Municipal Maintenance

The Streets and Drainage Department was out this week to repair a section of parking lot with new asphalt located in the Melbourne Estates apartment complex. The Water Department repaired a service line leak to a bank of meters where the sidewalk and a section of the parking lot needed to be removed.

Parks maintenance workers worked on several large tree trimming projects around the Veterans Memorial Complex and the Jan Lieson Crossroads Park. They hauled a total of 17,200 pounds of brush and trees to the Sarno Road landfill.

Water and Sewer Work

The Public Works Water Department completed 163 work orders, painted 19 fire hydrants, and replaced 16 failed residential backflow meters. Members of the crew participated in the American Water Works Association (AWWA) wet tap and fire hydrant competition at this year’s conference at Champions Gate in Orlando.

The Jacobs team completed 136 work orders and 23 sewer/reuse locates this week. The maintenance crew inspected and cleaned air release valve #8 located on the M-1 canal bank off of Sheridan Road. The crew pulled the lift station pumps at the Stephenson Drive lift station and removed build-up that was slowing down the pumps.

Quarterly Police Awards

This week, the department recognized members of the agency for their performance during the 3rd quarter of 2023. These awards are the result of nominations from their peers and review of the recommendations by the awards committee. Congratulations to all for their recognition and thank you for the hard work you do every day!

Reverse Christmas Parade

Members of the department participated in the 2023 Reverse Christmas Parade, and residents of the community had donated dozens of presents for less fortunate residents. Thank you to everyone who contributed to make this even a success.

Notable Incidents and Activities

DUI Arrest

There was a large police presence at Hollywood Boulevard/Sutton Avenue for a female passed out behind the wheel of her vehicle, stopped in the middle of the roadway. The roadway in both directions was shut down due to vehicle being disabled and a tow truck was called to remove the vehicle. The driver was arrested for DUI.

Robbery and Grand Theft Auto

Patrol units responded to America’s Best Value Inn where a victim claimed to have been beaten by a group of subjects, and his personal property and vehicle were stolen. The area agencies were notified of the vehicle information and it was found later at a 7-Eleven in Palm Bay. The vehicle was unoccupied, but two subjects matching the description given were detained in the area. CID assisted with interviewing the subjects where a full confession was obtained from one of the offenders. The two subjects were charged with robbery and grand theft auto. A search warrant was conducted on the hotel room to identify additional suspects. The suspects were transported to jail and the investigation is ongoing.

Stolen Vehicle

WMPD units attempted to stop a stolen vehicle in the area of Coastal Lane/U.S. 192. The driver of the stolen vehicle struck a WMPD patrol car and a citizen’s car while attempting to flee the area, thankfully there were no injuries. The stolen vehicle fled the area onto northbound I-95, finally being spotted in the Cocoa area. A suspect was identified and a warrant was issued for his arrest and he was taken into custody with assistance from the BCSO fugitive unit.

High Visibility Enforcement

This week, the department continued to publicize information about our grant-funded high visibility enforcement program in corridors that have been identified through crash statistics as having a high occurrence of pedestrian and bicyclist crashes. The program is 100% funded by a state grant given by the Florida Department of Transportation.
