West Melbourne Weekly Roundup

The City has, for years, published a weekly "Friday Memo" to share notable activities from the week and provide information on upcoming events. We love sharing information about the City, however we're trying something new! The traditional "Friday Memo" is transitioning into the West Melbourne Weekly Roundup. We'll continue providing a weekly summary of activities and upcoming events, but in a new, more mobile-friendly format. We hope you enjoy the fresh new look of our weekly publication!

Vacancies on City Boards

If you are interested in helping the City Council and staff make good decisions about the future of the City, consider serving on one of the City’s volunteer boards.

The Code Enforcement Board has two vacancies for alternate positions. If appointed, the individual will only be allowed to vote on matters if they serve to meet the necessary quorum. Applicants must be a City resident and a registered voter.

There is also one vacancy on the Board of Adjustment. The member to be appointed must have previously served on a planning/zoning board, code enforcement board, as an elected official, or as a member of a planning organization. Applicants must be a City resident and a registered voter.

There are also four vacancies on the City’s Business Advisory Board. Members must work for an establishment that holds a current business tax receipt in the City or a licensed business located within a one-mile radius of the City.

All positions on the boards are appointed by City Council. If you are interested, click on the link below to submit an application of interest or contact Deputy City Clerk Eric Popham at epopham@westmelbourne.gov for more information.

Transportation Representation

City Manager Tim Rhode was honored to represent West Melbourne during this year's Space Coast TPO’s (Transportation Planning Organization) annual State of Transportation. It's not every day you have the opportunity to share the stage to discuss the transportation needs of a unique region that is focusing on the five (yes, five) multi-modal forms of transportation. He has had the opportunity in his career to be in areas with the standard four (roads, rail, air, and port), but to discuss space travel with NASA and Kennedy Space Center in the room was next level. Also present representing the City was Council Member Daniel McDow. Thanks to all the other local government partners who also shared their transportation progress and the next round of great projects needed to keep the Space Coast region efficiently and effectively moving!

Open-Aired Market at

the Community Park

This past weekend, we hosted our open-air market and it was an energetic event that brought together 28 vendors. These vendors offered a wide range of products, from handmade crafts to delicious food items, appealing to the tastes and interests of the attendees. In addition to the market, the event also featured the Brevard Car Show that added a unique and thrilling element of the day. This event also had a remarkable turnout of 300 people. The next market will take place on December 10 from 10am-2pm.

Municipal Maintenance

The Streets and Drainage Department worked in the C-10 canal located off Buffalo Street with the Menzi by removing sediments from the bottom of the canal after making a pass by cutting the vegetation from the banks. The crew also repaired a wash out along the A-3 canal located off Sheridan Road.

Parks Maintenance Workers John Keable and Joe Law put American flags out on U.S. 192 on Saturday in honor of Veterans Day. The Parks crew also cleaned up the landscape beds and trimmed trees around City Hall this week.

Water and Sewer Work

The Public Works Water Department completed 165 work orders, serviced 4 fire hydrants, and exercised 6 in-line gate valves. The crew also replaced two older fire hydrants in the system that did not operate efficiently due to their age.

The Jacobs team completed 82 work orders, 101 sewer inspection requests, and 73 sewer/reuse locates this week. The maintenance crew made a repair to the 16-inch reuse main that developed a leak at one of its bell joints located behind Belmont Way. Once this area dries out, they will backfill the excavation site. The reuse distribution is back online.

Stomp Out Bullying

Walk

Members of the department joined staff and students from Central Middle School for the annual Stomp Out Bullying walk. Several students spoke about bullying, along with the Chief, Mayor, and school board members about the impact and steps that students can take to address the issue. From the PD, we walked to Central Middle School together.

Citizen's Police Academy

The 2023 Citizen’s Police Academy graduated from the 6-week class this week! In our final session, attendees learned about our K9 units and how they are utilized on patrol in service to the community.  At the completion of the evening, graduation certificates and a small token of our appreciation were distributed. We are grateful for the 18 residents who took time out of their busy schedules to build partnerships with us and learn more about their police department!

SALT Meeting

The department held another Seniors and Law Enforcement Together meeting, where we discussed traveling crime groups, awareness items to prevent distraction thefts or burglaries, and the latest crime trends in the area. We also highlighted the importance for signing up for emergency alerts and how that process can be accomplished. Thanks to everyone for their great questions and insight.

Well-Being Check

Patrol responded to the 400 block of Arrowood, for a report from DCF that a subject was angry and had threatened suicide. After a perimeter was established, the resident came out and it was determined that the subject who made the call was a relative who had provided the West Melbourne address. The check on well being was turned over to the Sheriff’s’ office, where the subject was eventually located and determined to not be a danger to himself at that time.

High Visibility Enforcement

This week, the department continued to publicize information about our grant-funded high visibility enforcement program in corridors that have been identified through crash statistics as having a high occurrence of pedestrian and bicyclist crashes. The program is 100% funded by a state grant given by the Florida Department of Transportation.

Vision Zero is a strategy to eliminate all traffic fatalities and severe injuries, while increasing safe, healthy, equitable mobility for all.

This Thanksgiving weekend, millions will hit our nation's roads, eager to spend time with family and friends. It’s one of the busiest travel times of the year, and unfortunately more people on the roadways means the potential for more vehicle crashes. Remember: Click It or Ticket ... cops will be watching you this Thanksgiving weekend.
