Originators in the commercial equipment finance and leasing industry answer to their clients, their companies, and their own ambitions. But let’s be honest, too many coast. Too many rely on yesterday’s effort. Too many confuse activity with progress.
I recently coached a veteran originator who had slipped into that trap. His numbers were fine. His routine was predictable. But he knew he wasn’t pushing himself. He was living off momentum he created years ago.
That’s not accountability. That’s survival.
So I gave him a simple, unforgiving exercise: Every Monday morning, write down two or three specific items that MUST be completed by Friday. Not “goals.” Not “intentions.” Tasks. Concrete. Measurable. Non‑negotiables.
Those items became his daily priority. No excuses. No drifting. No hiding behind busywork.
The first few weeks were easy; small tasks, quick wins. But then the list started to challenge him. It forced him to confront the work he’d been avoiding. It changed how he spent his days. It re‑energized him. It helped him launch a vendor program that had been stuck for months. It increased his monthly volume. It snapped him out of a rut he didn’t even realize he’d settled into.
Most importantly, it reminded him what it feels like to be fully engaged in the business again and to chase opportunity instead of waiting for it.
Now it’s your turn.
What are the two or three items you MUST complete this week? And what’s your plan to hold yourself accountable? No excuses, no delays, no coasting.
