Imam Hussein (AS)

O my followers! Whenever you drink refreshing water remember me Or whenever you heard about a martyred or a lonely person, weep for me I am the son of the Prophet who was martyred cruelly, And then smashed me intentionally under the hoofs of their horses. I wish you all were present in Ashoora and saw how I asked them for water for my infant, but they refused to give.

Imam Husein (a.s.)

Correction for timings of solar eclipse

On Thursday October 23rd 2014, there was a solar eclipse during which it is wajib (mandatory) for namaaz-e-ayaat to be prayed. It has been brought to our attention that there was an error in the timings of the eclipse that we had sent out in our emails. Please note the correct time for the eclipse was between 4:24pm and 6:40pm. If you had prayed namaaz-e-ayaat outside this time range then you will need to pray again with the niyyat of qadha. We apologize for any inconvenience.

Thank you so much for your prayers and support, it honestly means the world.

Muharram this year comes at an opportune time for our family. We request that you continue to keep Shaheen in your duas during these important nights.

Thanks again for your support. We are humbled and thankful to be a part of this special Minnesota community.

Guest Speakers for Muharram 1436

We are honored to have Syed Ali Hur Kamoonpuri visiting us from New Delhi, India. Syed Hur will be delivering lectures in English for the first 12 nights of Muharram. We are also pleased to announce that we will have Zakira Latifa Samji who will be here to deliver lectures for our Ladies. A brief biography for both of our guest speakers is given below:

Syed Ali Hur Kamoonpuri.

Syed Ali Hur was born in Swaziland, and moved to Dar-es-Salaam

(Tanzania), and lived there for about 12 years during which he completed his primary and secondary education from the Al-Muntazir Islamic Seminary, passing his O-levels (IGCSE) and A-Levels (Cambridge) exams with distinctions. He pursued further studies and undertook intense personal research in India, where he graduated with Bachelors and Masters degrees in Arabic Studies from AMU (Aligarh Muslim University), the flagship Muslim University in India.

He began his study of the Holy Quran from a very young age and had committed it to memory by the age of fifteen. He was tutored in the Islamic sciences by his father Maulana Dr. Sayyid Qasim Kamoonpuri, who was himself taught and groomed by his father, the late Allamah Dr. Sayyid Mujtaba Hasan Kamoonpuri, one of the most esteemed and leading Mujtahids of the Indian Subcontinent in the twentieth century.

Syed Ali started lecturing at the age of 12, and has delivered lectures for Ashra-e-Muharram, Ashra-e-Zaynabiyyah, Ayyame Fatimiyyah, Shahr Ramadhan and other religious occasions at different Islamic centers in the United States, the UK, East Africa, South Africa, India and the Middle East.

He has participated in, and presented papers at, numerous national and international level seminars and symposiums organized by the Departments of Arabic, English, Islamic Studies, and Theology at the AMU. His primary areas of academic and research interest include Quranic sciences, Tafseer (Exegesis), Hadith literature and textual criticism, the Nahjul Balagha, Islamic history and historiography, comparative jurisprudence as well as comparative religion.

He was also honored as the top English speaker in the Annual All-India Sir Syed Memorial Debates for several years in a row. He has a wide variety of awards from his university, has spoken at various conferences, and has gone on several international lecture tours to different countries in Asia, Africa, North America and Europe conducting workshops and interactive programs for the benefit of the youth.

He has been selected this year to pursue his PhD in Arabic Language and Literature as part of a doctoral program at the Aligarh Muslim University, and his dissertation proposal focuses on showcasing the literary contributions of Ibn Abil Hadeed al-Madaini (d. 656 AH), author of one of the most famous, colossal and voluminous commentaries of Nahjul Balagha to be written in the Abbasid period.

Zakira Latifa Samji

Zakira Latifa Samji was born in Zanzibar and completed her secondary education in Dar-es-Salam. Immigrating to Toronto in 1985, she pursued further studies in accounting.

Her migration to Canada during her teenage life led her to experience the western culture first hand and raised questions of her own identity and religion.  Her search to find answers led her to four years of studying at Hawza Ilmiya Imam Al-Asr in Medina, New York followed by a further four years at Jameat al-Zahra (sa) in Qum, Iran.  Zakira Latifa was honored with her degree in Islamic studies in 1996.

Returning back to Canada, she joined Seneca College and obtained her Diploma in Social Service Work.  She continued to pursue post secondary education at Ryerson University, where she graduated with a Bachelor of Applied Science in Social Work.

Zakira Latifa combines her love for her religion and her knowledge in social work by conducting seminars and workshops for mainstream Health Care & Social Service Providers on cultural awareness and issues that affect Muslim families.  She gives lectures both, locally and globally, especially about Islam and Women's issues. She has had the privilege to humbly serve communities in Australia, Ghana, Iran, and Tanzania.

Update from Resident Aalim committee

A little over 8 weeks ago we asked for our communities thoughts towards a resident Aalim in our Jaamat. We had a great response rate with 149 completed surveys. Overwhelmingly 93% of our community feels that a resident Aalim would benefit our Jammat. On top of that 100% of our youth ages (24 and under) feel a resident Aalim would be beneficial.

Please find the detailed survey results by clicking Here.  If you have questions, comments or feedback we'd like to hear from you and request you reach out to us at aalimcommittee@gmail

New No Nuts Policy

Exposure to nuts can be very dangerous and sometimes fatal for those with allergies. Following several requests from our members, the EC has decided to make all our buildings "nut free zones". This means that we will not be allowing any food that contains nuts to be consumed in our center.

We ask that you take the following steps to help us in this very important safety issue:

- Refrain from using nuts in any food being cooked for consumption at our center (niaz or tabarruk)

- Read the label of any pre-packaged food very carefully before bringing it to our center to avoid any disappointment

- Do not allow your children to bring any snacks/food containing nuts even if it is only for your child to consume during our programs.

In addition to this, we will be adding an Epipen to each first aid kit in our buildings. Epipens are very easy to use and can save the life anyone who has a serious anaphylactic reaction to an allergen.

If you have any questions or concerns, please contact any member of the EC. We appreciate your cooperation in helping our members stay safe.

Q & A from Ayatullah Sistani

Q. Can a person offer Salatul Layl before midnight, if he is unable to wake up before dawn.

A. Yes, he can.

Q. If a wife and husband are both working, and the husband incurs some debts, is it obligatory for the wife to help the husband in paying his debt or she can use her money as she wishes.

A. It is not necessary for the woman who is working to give her wages to her husband. The husband does not have the right to make her do so, but if the wife helps her husband from her own desire, then she has performed a praiseworthy action.
