lnyvUpdate On  Automatic Voter Registration
Last week the State Senate passed a bill to allow for automatic voter registration in New York State.  The bill is still pending in the Assembly and the League is working with our coalition partners to urge the Assembly Speaker to bring this bill to the floor.

This week, several media outlets reported that Assembly Speaker Heastie did not want to move the bill until several technical changes were made, including expanding the agencies who would be charged with assisting in automatically registering voters. Although we are in favor of expanding the number of agencies who register voters, we are more focused on seeing the legislation passed before the end of the session.

Several insiders have also suggested that the Governor may introduce his own version of the bill in his budget proposal (expected to be released early next week).  We will continue to keep members updated on the movement of this legislation.

The State of Virginia had an incredible victory this week with the passage of a state Equal Rights Amendment (ERA) to prohibit discrimination on the basis of sex. Here in New York, our state Assembly took up legisaltion to pass our own ERA. This legislation is limited in its scope of impact and will only add "sex" to the existing amendment.

The League is advocating for the passage of a stronger amendment that would also include ethnicity, national origin, age, disability, sexual orientation, or gender identity. The Governor has proposed this amendment as part of his State of the State address and we expect to see the legislation as part of his budget proposal. We hope to join Virginia in passing this amendemt over the next several months.
