Hometown Heroes – LAEF Director, Board, Staff, Teachers and Sponsors
Los Alamitos Education Foundation (LAEF) is well known in our community for providing enrichment classes and extraordinary educational experiences that benefit every student from T-K through 12th grade in the Los Alamitos Unified School District.
When school closures were announced early in March, this meant that all LAEF After School Enrichment opportunities would also be lost to the kids in our District. This deeply concerned LAEF Executive Director, Carrie Logue, but she wasted no time fretting over what she couldn’t change and focused on changes that would allow the continuation of LAEF’s mission to provide enriching educational experiences to all Los Al kids. With the support of the LAEF Board, teachers, staff and sponsors, LAEFtv was born!
Beginning March 16th and continuing every afternoon during the school week, through the end of April, LAEF released 30 unique episodes of LAEFtv. Hundreds of families viewed the LAEF YouTube channel and tuned in for LAEFtv episodes, covering hands-on topics including family activities, STEM Birdhouse, cooking with kids, Muay Thai Kickboxing, art projects, sports games, magic and cheerleading, to name a few. LAEF’s corporate sponsors stepped up to support LAEFtv, funding teacher pay for developing content.
Another way LAEF and their amazing sponsors have stepped up in this time of uncertainty is to support our Los Alamitos High School Seniors. LAEF has awarded an unprecedented 36 College Scholarships in the amount of $31,100 to Los Al Seniors this year!
LAEF staff and teachers are now busy developing content for the first ever Virtual Summer Enrichment Institute. Teachers are bravely learning new technology and revising their curriculum to continue enriching kids in this new way and provide a much-needed respite for parents.
The immediate future for our children is still unclear, but one thing we can count on is that LAEF will continue to find ways to bring joy, happiness and learning opportunities to each and every one of them.
