Dear PCUM family,

In a time of war, partisanship, and judgementalism, this short quote by Dietrich Bonhoeffer can be a lifeline. Bonhoeffer was the young German pastor and theologian executed by the Nazis in April 1945, just weeks before the Second World War ended in Europe. His supposed crime was that he joined the plot to overthrow Hitler while challenging German Christians to put their trust in the grace of Jesus Christ ahead of their fear of, and attraction to, the power of the Third Reich.

Bonhoeffer said:

“The day will come … when people will once more be called to speak the word of God in such a way that the world is changed and renewed. It will be in a new language, perhaps a quite non-religious language, but liberating and redeeming like Jesus’ language, so that people will be unsettled, and yet overcome, by its power—the language of a new righteousness and truth, a language proclaiming that God makes peace with humankind and that God’s kingdom is drawing near.”

― Dietrich Bonhoeffer, Letters and Papers from Prison, DBW Vol 8

In Christ's peace,

Pastor Greg
