Mary Magdalene Church

~Weekly Update~

Mary Magdalene Church is an inclusive church in the Catholic tradition where people from all faiths and backgrounds are welcome to the Lord’s table. We strive to live the values that Jesus taught, to honor and respect each individual and to share the joy of God’s unconditional love in our community and beyond.

~A Message from Reverend Lori~

Dear Denise,

In honor of Mother Mary, a poem to help us see from Carmelite sister Jessica Powers (1948):

Advent

I live my Advent in the womb of Mary.

And on one night when a great star swings free

from its high mooring and walks down the sky

to be the dot above the Christus i,

I shall be born of her by blessed grace.

I wait in Mary-darkness, faith’s walled place,

with hope’s expectance of nativity.

I knew for long she carried me and fed me,

guarded and loved me, though I could not see.

But only now, with inward jubilee,

I come upon earth’s most amazing knowledge:

someone is hidden in this dark with me.

All the love,

Rev. Lori

Thank you for joining us!

If for some reason we are unable to stream live, our Mass will always be posted on YouTube the following Monday morning.

From Your Social Justice Ministry...

The Social Justice Committee engages in finding organizations that support civil justice for all people of vulnerable communities. We all know of individuals that could benefit from these organizations. Kevin Beckford introduced us to the Telesca Center for Justice. The center is a revolutionary, collaborative model comprised of four legal organizations committed to using the power of the law to stabilize lives. They provide civil representation to low-income individuals in Monroe County by bringing together resources and people who share a vision for a fairer, brighter community for all.

Named in honor of Senior U.S. District Judge Michael A. Telesca, the Telesca Center For Justice houses four non-profits —which include Empire Justice CenterJustCause, The Legal Aid Society of Rochester, and Legal Assistance of Western NY— working to promote meaningful and equitable access to justice –via the civil legal system– to the most vulnerable in our communities. The Telesca Center for Justice honors the strength that comes with true collaboration and multiplies the partners' collective impact, ensuring more community members have access to justice.

Things to do at MMC!

Christmas Week Office Hours

The office will be open regular hours on Monday, December 23rd; Tuesday, by appointment only and closed on Christmas.

Parking for Christmas Eve Mass

Our Mass on December 24th will be held at 4PM. If you are able, please consider parking at First Church Christ, Scientist 1104 Main Street or on the right-hand side of Brizee Street (across from our driveway). This will ensure that folks with mobility issues are able to park close to the church. Also, please remember that our parking lot is one-way only. Please proceed counterclockwise as you make your way around the parked cars. Thank you!

Pastoral Search Committee Nominations

The Board of Trustees is seeking individuals to serve on the Pastoral Search Committee. This committee will help lead the process of hiring the next pastor of Mary Magdalene Church and will be comprised of 3 members of the community and 2 board members. If you are interested or know of someone who would be a good candidate for this important role, please submit your nomination by December 22nd. More information will be presented on Sunday during the announcements. You can find the ballot box in the hallway on the table.

A note from Dory Deisenroth...

From October to December Mary Magdalene Church participated in the collection of winter apparel for those in need. Coats, hats, gloves and socks filled the collection box each Sunday for twelve weeks. This year Mary Magdalene members donated over 300 coats! The coats and winter apparel were taken to the Open Door Mission donation center on 20 North Plymouth in Rochester.

From this new clothing distribution center, coats, hats, gloves and socks were given freely to anyone in need. The Open Door Mission also coordinates delivery of clothing through this location to other agencies that have identified those in need. Clothing can be dropped off at this site at anytime of year.

The Open Door Mission has served the Rochester community for 72 years by providing prepared meals, housing and clothing for those in need. To volunteer contact volunteer@opendoormission.com

Money Ball is Back!

Snow Angels

It's that time of year again when we ask for volunteers to help clear the sidewalks and steps of snow and ice on Sunday mornings. We have a power shovel that is relatively easy to use and several regular shovels. Rock salt is available inside the back door and near the elevator in the front of the church. You would need to arrive to church early, between 9:15-9:30. Many hands make light work! If you can help please contact Sue. Thank you!

CALM Ministry

CALM Ministry is a ministry of listening. We believe the gift of listening helps to alleviate suffering and that the gift of presence is one of the greatest gifts we can offer another. If you are hurting or lonely, we have trained soul-listeners who offer time and space to truly listen in a confidential and non-judgmental manner. CALM Ministers are not counselors and do not offer advice. They do, however, offer a warm heart and a soft landing place. For more information, please see our brochure, or email Lori Cunliff at calm.ministry.mm@gmail.com
