Facing Racism: A Vision of the Beloved Community (PCUSA)

The Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) acknowledges that dismantling racism is a long-term journey requiring discernment, prayer, and action rooted in worship. To respond to this challenge, the 211th General Assembly (1999) approved Facing Racism: A Vision of the Beloved Community, a comprehensive policy document that guides the church’s ministry of “racial” justice into the 21st century.

Answering God’s Call: Reflection, Confronting, and Actions for Justice

·        As we, the broken community, move into 2025, what is God calling us to do and be?

·        How can I engage in honest self-reflection to identify and confront biases or behaviors that contribute to racism within myself, my relationships, and my community?

·        How am I challenging public policies, actions, or systems that promote or sustain racism, and how can I deepen my commitment to this work?

Reading Genesis…Again

Who created the world?

And in how many days?

And what did that serpent say to Eve in the garden?

And how many animals did Noah put on the ark?

And Onan did what? And who was Onan?

And how many colors were in Joseph’s coat?

Ahhh, all those intriguing questions…and more. Like, who wrote Genesis? And when? And where? And why?

But then come the really crucial questions:

What is the relevance of Genesis…for us?

Why should we bother studying Genesis?

What does Genesis reveal to us about…God?

What might Genesis teach us about…ourselves?

You are invited to join a class on the book of Genesis being taught by Dr. Loren M. Scribner at Grosse Ile Presbyterian Church, this winter on Wednesday evenings beginning January 8 from 6:45 p.m. until 8. The class will meet both virtually and in person. If you come in person, you could even join us for a tasty dinner before class.

The text for the course, Reading Genesis Again for the First Time: A Radical Commentary, has recently been published by a friend of Loren’s, Rabbi Joseph Klein. Rabbi Klein is pastor Emeritus of Temple Emanu-El in Oak Park, Michigan. He currently is an adjunct professor teaching Genesis, among other subjects, at Oakland University and Rochester Christian University.

The text can be purchased on Amazon: paperback $10.99, Kindle $5.99, hardcover $19.99. If you would like to explore Genesis with us, or have us order a book for you, please call the Grosse Ile Presbyterian office at 734-676-8811.
