Outgoing and Incoming Moderators and Vice Moderators

for the Presbytery of Detroit

First, the Synod AC for the Presbytery of Detroit would like to thank Kevin Smith and Teresa Peterson, who served as moderator and vice-moderator, respectively, for both 2023 and 2024. Their tenure did not involve moderating large presbytery meetings, as they no doubt expected, but their leadership, including service at ordinations and installations, was valuable and well appreciated.

Former Moderator, Elder Kevin Smith

Former Vice-Moderator, Rev. Teresa Peterson

And now we are delighted to announce that we have elected a new moderator and vice-moderator for 2025: Mary Lloyd and Sharon Moore.

We cannot yet be absolutely sure of precisely what roles Mary and Sharon will fill over the year ahead, but we are clear that we look forward to working closely with both of them, to benefit from their perspectives and their wisdom as, to borrow Sharon’s words, “we move forward in faith.”

And we share in the hope for the Presbytery of Detroit that Mary expressed: “that trust and faith are cultivated in ways that parallel the goals of the Synod and PC(USA) for God’s presence, love, justice, grace, and mercy in the world.”

Please join us in welcoming Mary and Sharon into these new roles.

2025 Moderator, Elder Mary Lloyd-Seals

2025 Vice-Moderator, Elder Sharon Moore

Knowing our Black History

Groveland 4

Grosse Ile Presbyterian Church

February Adult Classes

Ever heard of the Groveland 4?

No? Most people haven’t. And yet it explains why so many black people are distrustful of whites. This wasn't an event that could be dismissed as having occurred many generations back. It happened during the lifetime of many of us.

The 9 a.m. Sunday Adult class will look at the PBS documentary which chronicles the rape accusation of four young black men, beatings, murder of one suspect, trials, death sentence verdicts, appeals, murder of a second suspect, retrial and second death sentencing of the final accused.

If we thought injustice against blacks ended with the abolition of slavery and the Jim Crow laws, we are mistaken. This is recent history; it affects so many relations today. GIPC’s own Phil Kennedy will lead us in this informative, eye-opening look at what helped shape our history.

If you’re willing to have your mind opened & stretched & learn something new, come join us at 9-10 a.m. February 2, 9. & 16Join us in person (7925 Horsemill Rd, Grosse Ile, MI) or on-line
