~ A Message From Rev. Celie Katovitch ~

Greetings!

At last it’s here… Advent, the start of a new year (in church time!)— and also my first Sunday as your pastor. How beautiful it is that so many of the scriptures we read in these weeks paint pictures of new beginnings, and a flowering of renewal both in creation and within us. I’m so excited to be here with you at this time of joyful anticipation at MMC. We are right in tune with the spirit of Advent in looking hopefully towards the future that is preparing to be born.

We have a rich season ahead of us! Our Good Trouble Tuesday evening services return starting this coming week (Dec. 2) at 5:45. We are blessed to have Kathy Welch joining us for music ministry that evening, and a concert by Kathy and friends will also follow the Mass. Continuing to build on this season’s call to renewal, our theme for this year is “a new heart”— recalling God’s promise to keep our hearts tender and guard them from “stoniness” (Ez. 36:26), despite all that might tempt us toward cynicism amidst the present world’s hurly-bury. What renews you and keeps your heart soft these days? To invite us to keep reflecting on this throughout the week, there will also be an Advent devotional you can pick up on your way into or out of Mass each Sunday this month, with scripture verses and questions to meditate on day by day until the next Sunday. Please do help yourself!

As you heard last weekend at Mass, this year we will have 2 Christmas Eve services — our usual 4:00, and a 7:00 candlelight service. We are also experimenting with offering a Christmas Day Mass at 10AM.

Finally, as we begin our ministry together, I wanted to share a few nitty-gritty details regarding my contact information, schedule, etc., for you to tuck away in case you need them.

My phone number for most church purposes: 315-538-4910. I typically schedule appointments during Mondays through Thursdays, and Saturdays as needed. Friday is my day off.

My e-mail: revcelie@gmail.com.

In cases of an emergency requiring a priest (eg., last rites, serious illness), my personal cell number: 315-877-3302. In such cases, no matter the day (even Friday) or time, you are never bothering me to call.

Be well, everyone, and looking forward to seeing you in church!

Love,

—Rev. Celie

Sunday Morning Parking Reminder!! 🚗

We’re grateful for the vibrant Sunday mornings at MMC and for the generosity of our neighbors at First Church of Christ, Scientist (1104 Main St.), who graciously share their lot with us. To ensure safety and continued hospitality, please follow these parking guidelines:

  • MMC Lot Traffic Flow: All vehicles must enter to the right and follow a counter-clockwise pattern.
  • No Shoulder Parking: Please do not park on the driveway shoulder—this keeps the way clear for emergency vehicles.
  • Neighboring Lot Use: If parking at First Church of Christ, Scientist, please drive slowly, enter/exit with care, and park only in the back of their lot.
  • Street Parking: Be mindful of Village parking regulations when parking along the street.

Thank you for helping us be good neighbors and for making our shared space safe and welcoming for all!

November is Native American Heritage Month which celebrates and honors the histories, cultures and contributions of Native Americans and Alaska Natives.

Did you know:

There are 574 federally recognized tribes in the US, each with unique languages, governments, and cultural traditions. About 7.4 million people in the US identify at Native American or Alaska Native. While some live on their ancestral homelands, about 71% now live in urban areas.

Native-owned businesses contribute billions to the US economy, yet many Native communities experience disproportionate poverty, health disparity, and environmental injustice.

The Haudenosaunee (Iroquois) Confederacy’s “Great Law of Peace,” with its democratic principles, influenced the Founding Fathers and the writers of our US Constitution.

Our traditional Thanksgiving holiday is a complicated day for Native

Americans. Many celebrate the spirit of Gratitude - for family, community, and the land - that is central to their culture. For others, Thanksgiving is a day of mourning and protest since it commemorates the arrival of settlers in North America and the centuries of oppression and genocide that followed. Musical Notes from Kathy English

As we welcome the beautiful season of Advent, a season of longing, anticipation and hopeful expectation of Christ’s coming, we will see our music and song reflect the themes of waiting and preparation.

I thought I would share some music highlights to mark this Season:

  • Each week, we will light the Advent candle while singing a short call and response song which concludes with a very familiar “rejoice, rejoice! Emanuel shall come to you, O Israel “
  • We’ll sing the Mass Parts from the Mass of Mary Magdalene by Sara Hart that we learned last year and add the Holy, Holy! ( see link below to hear it! )
  • There may be silence after Homily!

I would also like to share that Christmas Day 10 am Mass will be the last time John Palocy will be regularly with us on piano. John is a professional musician who has volunteered his time and wonderful talent each month for the past couple of years. I am deeply grateful for his gift and will miss his beautiful meditation interpretations, his improvisations and sense of humor too! Thank you, John.

It is my joy to sing with you each week and hear your amazing voices lifted in sung prayer! May you be blessed in your waiting time.

With love,

Kathy English

Following the December 2nd Mass, Kathy Welch and friends will provide an hour of musical reflection and a chance to sing along in hope for our world beginning at 6:45PM.
