Mary Magdalene Church

~Weekly Update~

Mary Magdalene Church is an inclusive church in the Catholic tradition where people from all faiths and backgrounds are welcome to the Lord’s table. We strive to live the values that Jesus taught, to honor and respect each individual and to share the joy of God’s unconditional love in our community and beyond.

Greetings!

Connecting Across Time: Remembering Our Loved Ones

Every year, as October turns into November, we have the chance to celebrate the deep and enduring connectedness we share, not just with our global human family, but also with those who have gone before us. In the Catholic tradition we celebrate the dual feast of All Saints and All Souls, but this is a celebration that truly stretches across time and cultures.

From the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain (“sow-win”) that marks the end of the harvest and the beginning of the dark half of the year, to the vibrant and joyous Mexican celebration of Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead), people across the world take this time to honor their ancestors and remember their loved ones who have passed away. These traditions remind us that love doesn't end with death, it simply changes form.

This speaks to the heart of our faith, which is built on the hope of resurrection and the communion of saints, a bond that unites the living and the dead in Christ.

And so on November 2nd I’d like to invite us to create a sacred space that physically represents this connection across time. Please bring a framed photo of a loved one or loved ones who have passed away and place it on the altar before Mass begins. This is an opportunity to bring a physical reminder of those we love into our liturgy.

If you’re like me, you’ll get halfway to church and remember that you forgot your photo. That’s okay too! We’ll have some cards you can use to write the names of your loved ones and place them on the altar just in case you forget to bring a photo.

I hope this will be a good way to remember those we have loved but see no more, and maybe will spark some reminiscing and storytelling after liturgy during coffee hour.

In Peace,

Tim Powers
