On July 18th 2024 the Synod of the Covenant Administrative Commission approved two policies to help support the Presbytery of Detroit, and our congregations, in relationship to how we care for churches on the threshold of making decisions regarding the future of the congregation. The policies are as follows:

“Policy Concerning the Dismissal, Dissolution, Merger, Consolidation of a Congregation of the Presbytery of Detroit”

and

“Policy for the Distribution of Proceeds from Dissolved Congregations And Establishment of the “Rise Up Fund.”

These policies provide language, definitions, process, and financial transparency for how funds are used after a church closes and the property is sold. While these policies are comprehensive, they by no means can address every nuance that God has in store. We remain open to the sovereign activity of God in the Church and in the world.

If you would like to learn more about these policies, join the Rev. Dr. Melissa Allison, Stated Clerk, for a Zoom presentation on Monday, September 9th 2024 at 6:30pm. All are welcome to attend.

HISTORIC MASH-UP: PAULA SCHER MURAL DEPICTS RIGHTS MOVEMENTS

Thought for the Week

John Lewis urges us to think about how, “We may have come here on different ships, but we are all in the same boat now.” Fannie Lou Hamer reminds us, “Nobody's free until everybody's free.''

With the important exception of Native Americans, indigenous to the land, everyone living in our country is either an immigrant, or a descendant of immigrants. Whatever our ancestry, history, or cultural/ethnic/racial background, here we all are, together--all of us living in an increasingly diverse country on so many levels. All of us, in this time and in this place, decide how we will respond in our current context. How do we decide?

For reflection:

-      If I am a person of color, or a person of white, do I see all of us “in the same boat now,” and if I do, what does this mean?”

-      Am I willing to engage others in exploring how we are all “in the same boat now”---and how they may see this differently than I do?

-      How do I understand the statement, “Nobody's free until everybody's free?” Do I believe this? Does this have any impact on how I decide to live in this country?

Fannie Lou Hamer also said, “I'm sick and tired of being sick and tired,” and she spent most of her life persistently challenging, and working hard to bring change to, the things that made her “sick and tired.” John Lewis said, “When you see something that is not right, not fair, not just, you have to speak up. You have to say something; you have to do something.” I would add, “when you see something that is not right, not fair, not just” for yourself AND for others (and I think he would agree). Recently, recounting something her mother would say to her, as well as something Kamala Harris’ mother taught her daughters, Michelle Obama told the nation not to sit around and complain, but to “do something.”

For reflection:

-      What makes me “sick and tired,” fed up and disgusted, wanting to give up and walk away—in the world, in this country, in my community, in my congregation?

-      Am I going to just complain, or will I actually do something to improve the situation?

-      What will I do? Where is the Spirit calling me to action?

Equipping Peacemakers in Congregations and Around the World.

A gift to the Peace & Global Witness Offering enables the church to promote the Peace of Christ by addressing systems of conflict and injustice across the world.

Individual congregations are encouraged to utilize up to 25% of this Offering

for peacemaking efforts that align with their passion.

Mid-councils retain an additional 25% for ministries of peace and reconciliation.

The remaining 50% is used by the Presbyterian Mission Agency to advocate for

peace and justice in cultures of violence, including our own, through

collaborative projects of education and Christian witness.

events & deadlines this week

Faiths United to Save Democracy (FUSD) believes that everyone is created in the image of God and deserves to vote in free, fair, and safe elections. With violence threatened at the polls in many states during the 2024 Elections, our multifaith, multi-racial, intergenerational poll chaplains (ordained and lay leaders) and peacekeepers, will help provide a calming and moral presence to vulnerable voters, such as the elderly, disabled, youth, and other disenfranchised citizens (Genesis 1.27; Matthew 5:9).
