Governor Vetos Costly Unemployment Insurance Bill

Earlier this week, Governor Gavin Newsom vetoed Senate Bill 799 (Portantino; D-Burbank), a priority bill CBPA lobbied against alongside a coalition of business groups. The bill, which was heavily backed by organized labor would have been disastrous for businesses large and small and would have ballooned California's already high federal unemployment insurance debt. The measure aimed to provide Unemployment Insurance (UI) benefits to individuals who left work and chose to go on strike during a labor dispute.  We applaud Governor Newsom for making this fiscally prudent decision and for choosing to protect California businesses by vetoing SB 799.

CBPA is pleased to welcome California's newest U.S. Senator Laphonza Butler. We look forward to working with Senator Butler as she assumes the office vacated by Senator Dianne Feinstein upon her passing.

Senator Butler is the President of Emily's List, a political action committee that aims to help elect Democratic female candidates in favor of abortion rights to office. Prior to this role she served as president of California SEIU State Council from 2013 to 2018.
