Legislative Flavor of the Week: Property Taxes
Good news!  Minnesota's House of Representatives and Senate majorities released parts of their tax plans which include a significant reduction in business property taxes - a legislative priority for your Chamber. Both plans will repeal the automatic inflator and reduce the state levy. The House will exempt the first $200,000 of market value from the state levy and the Senate will exempt the first $100,000 of market value. The market value exemptions result in more tax relief being provided to lower value properties.
We do remain concerned over the market value exemption approach and the Chamber Federation recommends a more straightforward and equitable approach to reduce the overall state levy.  The market value exemption approach targets more relief to lower valued properties which will benefit more businesses in Greater MN as they have more of the lower valued properties.
We encourage our Legislators to ensure the automatic inflator is repealed and to advocate for the market value exemption at the lower level of $100,000 with additional dollars put forth to decrease the overall state levy in order to provide more relief to businesses across Minnesota, especially those in the Dakota County region.
