DC CFAR Honors Trailblazing Community Partners |
On June 24, 2021, the DC CFAR hosted a virtual Community Recognition event which included the premiere of the video titled, " They Made a Difference and We Thank Them: The DC CFAR Honors Trailblazing Community Partners", a project documenting the important contributions of these trailblazers to the early community response to the HIV epidemic and to the DC CFAR. In addition to this video, individual Community Profile videos were produced to capture additional stories and memories. We gratefully acknowledge the individuals who generously shared their stories and will feature their interviews in upcoming editions of the Weekly Update. We invite you to view these oral history videos on the DC CFAR website and hear the experiences of our community partners in their own words. |

Community Profile Video: Dr. Ron Simmons
Dr. Ron Simmons was a founding member of the DC CFAR Community Advisory Board and remained deeply engaged until his passing in May 2020. Dr. Simmons was a researcher who worked closely with many CFAR investigators, generously sharing his insights and expertise. In his interview, Dr. Simmons describes his experience in the early days of the HIV epidemic and his work as the President/CEO of Us Helping Us, People Into Living, Inc. Us Helping Us is a nonprofit community-based AIDS services organization that provides HIV prevention and support services to the African-American community in DC. We share this captivating video, with deep gratitude to Dr. Simmons. He was an inspirational leader, pioneer, friend, teacher, mentor, and colleague who is greatly missed.

New NIH OAR Early Career Investigator Resources
Supporting a Diverse Next Generation of HIV Investigators
|
The NIH Office of AIDS Research (OAR) has released new resources for HIV early career investigators. The resources are centralized in a new website that features a number of grant opportunities, training, and capacity-building programs. The site was created in response to input NIH OAR received through multiple stakeholder events, additional input received can be found in the 2020 OAR Stakeholder Outreach Report. These resources are shared to support and promote a diverse next generation of HIV Investigators.

Announcing the Spring 2022 DC CFAR Traditional Pilot Awards Cycle |
The DC CFAR is pleased to announce the next round of soliciting research proposals through our Pilot Awards Program. The goal of the Traditional Pilot Awards is to provide pilot research funds to early stage and new HIV/AIDS investigators to collect preliminary data that will enable them to then compete successfully for NIH funding in HIV/AIDS as principal investigators. Please see the RFA for specific eligibility requirements.
Applications should focus on the NIH high priority HIV/AIDS research areas. Special consideration will be given to applications in the focus areas of the DC CFAR Scientific Working Groups (SWGs) in HIV Cure Research and Ending the HIV Epidemic and Scientific Interest Groups (SIGs) in Drug User Health, Women and HIV, Aging and Comorbidities, Latina/x/o, Global, and Sexual and Gender Minorities. Applicants are strongly encouraged to contact the relevant SWG and/or SIG leaders to explore possible mentorship and/or collaboration on their proposals. The NIH Office of AIDS Research (OAR) has announced a new resource for Early Career Investigators which provides easy access to grant opportunities, basic information, and other resources, such as training and capacity-building programs.
The University of California, San Francisco, Center for AIDS Prevention Studies (CAPS) announces the Ujima Mentoring Program (Ujima Program) which provides multidisciplinary research mentoring and funding to early-stage investigators, particularly those at Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), who focus their programs of research on high priority areas that address HIV prevention, care, and treatment in Black/African American communities. Applications are due March 1st.
The 2022 NIH mHealth Training Institute is now accepting applications. This program is designed to develop the next generation of transdisciplinary mHealth researchers. Applications are due February 20.
Join Fellowship opportunity to examine current challenges in HIV and drug abuse research ethics. Applications are due February 23.
The AIDS Clinical Trials Group (ACTG) Network in collaboration with the NIAID Division of AIDS (DAIDS) has developed a new pathway for the conduct of small experimental trials that aim to advance efforts related to HIV remission and cure utilizing the infrastructure of the ACTG Network. Applications are due April 1st.
