Coming November 14: Good Day Dakota County
We are kicking off our new general membership luncheon on Monday, November 14 and we hope you will join us! This new program, called Good Day Dakota County, will be held the second Monday of each month and offers the opportunity to learn about the latest hot topics and events happening in the region. Attendees will also have the opportunity to network with other Chamber members, enjoy a delicious lunch and have the chance to win $100!

You read that right! Each month we will be drawing the name of one of our member businesses. If there is at least one representative from that business in attendance, the $100 is theirs. If there isn't a representative in attendance, the $100 will be added to the pot for the next month! Thank you to
Home Federal for making this exciting addition possible. Your membership really does pay!
Good Day Dakota County on November 14 will feature an update from the SuperBowl LII Committee! We will hear from Alex Tittle, VP of Business Connect and Corporate Affairs, on the economic impact of hosting an event of this magnitude in our region along with an overview of what is being planned in Minnesota for the SuperBowl in 2018. Alex will also share information on the Business Connect program and the opportunity for qualified diverse and underutilized businesses in Minnesota to get involved.

Paid Sick Time Ordinance Challenged
Last week, our industry partner, the Minnesota Chamber, filed a lawsuit to challenge Minneapolis' paid sick time ordinance. The lawsuit asks the judge to strike down the ordinance and in the meantime prevent the city of Minneapolis from enforcing it. The ordinance is unlawful because it conflicts with state law and seeks to regulate in a policy area that is a statewide concern. Simply put, they seek, and we support, consistency of workplace laws to prevent a patchwork of city-by-city workplace regulations.

The lawsuit parallels our Chamber's efforts at the Legislature to make explicit the fact that state law preempts municipal regulation of wages and benefits. We, along with our chamber partners, will renew our efforts in 2017 since the Legislature failed to take action this year.
Employers need consistent, statewide workplace regulations. However, mandates on everyday business operations are not appropriate coming from any level of government. Businesses across the state already are adopting paid leave policies designed to meet the particular needs of their enterprise and their employees. State and local policymakers should be encouraging this trend and not imposing one-size-fits-all mandates. Watch Weekly Update for further updates on this important business issue that transcends community boundaries.
Legislative Breakfast: Literacy of the Un-Affordable Care Act

  • Peter Nelson, Director of Public Policy, Center for the American Experiment

Member Spotlight: Professional and Personal Growth
Dan Sjolseth, Superior Service Center
Superior Service Center provides auto repair, auto body, tire, and towing service with locations in Eagan and Apple Valley. In 1987 when I moved my business to  Eagan, one of the first things I did was to join the Chamber. I soon found there was an incredible benefit of meeting other members of the Chamber as many of them acted like a mentor to me. My goal was to meet and network with other local business owners and also to work together to coordinate special community events. I feel that the Chamber has offered me professional and personal growth through my engagement in networking events and as a new board member.
