Dear Friends,

It is my greatest honor to represent you in Congress. As always, my mission is to advocate for Upstate New York and the North Country’s priorities at the highest levels of government. Here is a look at my past week working for you in Congress.

Hosting my 1,500th In-District Event at the Fulton County Sheriff’s Office Appreciation Breakfast

5.6.22 fulton county sheriffs award.jpg

For my 1,500th event serving New York’s 21st District, I cannot think of a better place to be than with the brave law enforcement and first responders in Johnstown. I am honored to receive the Fulton County Sheriff’s Office Recognition Award for my work to support the mental health and suicide prevention services for our veterans and police, who have made incredible sacrifices for our safety. The importance of mental health resources for our law enforcement and our veterans is something that can no longer be ignored, and I am committed to ensuring they have access to the resources necessary to grapple with mental health struggles to prevent further suicides.

Visiting Saranac Lake Volunteer Fire Department

Our North Country firefighters selflessly answer the call to serve day or night. At this year’s Saranac Lake Winter Carnival Parade, I promised Fire Chief Keough that I would visit and tour the over 100-year-old fire station to see how we can help identify federal funds to rebuild. This week, I visited and heard the concerns of our Saranac Lake Volunteer Fire Department directly from our firefighters. As the Department grows to meet the needs of the Saranac Lake community, I am proud to advocate for these frontline workers to have the funding they need to effectively meet the community’s needs and to keep themselves safe.

Honoring Charles “Minnie” Dole for Contributions to the 10th Mountain Division in Paul Smiths

5.2 charles minnie dole pb.jpg

On Monday, I was in Paul Smiths to honor the enduring legacy of Charles Minot “Minnie” Dole and his impact on the founding of the National Ski Patrol and formation of the 10th Mountain Division. He saw potential for how his passion for skiing could serve our nation, and because of his advocacy, he established the 10th Mountain Division as the elite fighting force we know it to be today. The North Country is the proud home to the most deployed Army Division since 9/11 because of his vision. I was proud to present a Congressional Record to recognize his enduring legacy!

Touring Small Business Gehring-Tricot in Dolgeville

Our small businesses are the backbone of our economy in Upstate New York and the North Country. Today, I toured Gehring-Tricot to learn more about their work and hear firsthand the concerns facing our small businesses, so I can bring them to the highest levels.

As a senior member of the House Education and Labor Committee, I have introduced several legislative solutions -- including the Employer-Directed Skills Act and the American Workforce Recovery Act -- to equip both our workers and employers to support our small businesses. I will continue to advocate for their needs.

Visiting Fulton County Center for Regional Growth in Gloversville

During my visit today, I witnessed firsthand the impact of Fulton County Center for Regional Growth. Their work has been critical to supporting the small businesses of our region. I am proud to support this organization by advocating for federal funding through grants and the annual appropriations process, so they can continue this critical work and continue to build up our region’s economic development.

Protecting Veterans’ Resources from Illegal Immigrants

I will always stand up for our brave veterans and their hard-earned benefits. Recently, Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas confirmed conversations between agency staff to divert Veterans Affairs resources, doctors, and nurses to help care for illegal immigrants. I sponsored the Veterans First Act of 2022 to prohibit the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) from prioritizing the needs of illegal immigrants over our nation’s veterans as the Biden administration expects another surge of illegal immigration at the southern border following their efforts to rescind the Title 42 immigration policy.

Joe Biden owns this border crisis, and not a single resource for our veterans should be redirected due to this administration’s failure to secure our southern border. Fueling illegal immigration at the expense of our nation’s heroes is a shameful way to govern, but I am proud to take this action to stand up for what our veterans rightfully are owed.

This Week in Washington

Statement on the Unprecedented Supreme Court Leak

On Monday evening, there was an unprecedented leak of the Supreme Court opinion on the Dobbs case. This was an attempt to severely damage the Supreme Court. This clearly coordinated campaign to intimidate and obstruct the Justices of the United States Supreme Court, and its independence in our political system, from upholding the Constitution must be immediately investigated by the court.

I am committed to upholding the sanctity of life, and I will continue to fight to be a voice for the truly voiceless. There is nothing more special, extraordinary, and worth fighting for than the miracle of life. I pray for the resolve of our Justices and for a decision that protects our most basic and precious right, the right to life.

Standing Up for Free Speech

I will always stand up for Americans’ First Amendment right to free speech. As the Biden administration takes one more step towards Communism by creating a Disinformation Governance Board, I am proud to cosponsor legislation to terminate this obstruction to Americans’ free speech and prevent taxpayer dollars from funding any future attack on this Constitutional right.

I cosponsored the Protecting Free Speech Act to terminate the Department of Homeland Security’s Disinformation Governance Board, also known as the “Ministry of Truth,” and to prohibit any federal funds from being used to establish or carry out the activities of any other entity that is substantially similar.
