DCR Chamber Ribbon Cutting Opportunities for You
Opening a new business, relocating, reopening, remodeling or launching a new product? DCR Chamber provides the opportunity for members to host a ribbon cutting. Ribbon cuttings are great opportunity to bring members of the Chamber and community into your business, introduce yourself to others and advertise your company.
DCR Chamber will invite Ambassadors to attend the event to honor your business. Additionally, we will advertise your ribbon cutting in the events section of Weekly Update and the online events calendar. Staff members will attend your ribbon cutting, bringing the big scissors and ribbon. Following the event, we will include a picture from the ribbon cutting in the Celebrate Business Success section of Weekly Update for members to see. And the best part, ribbon cuttings are complimentary for being a member of the chamber!

We are currently looking for a Ribbon Cutting Sponsor. As a sponsor of these events, it's a great opportunity to showcase your company during these celebrations and receive recognition through Weekly Update. Participants will remember you and the branded scissors long after the event ends!
If you are interested in scheduling a ribbon cutting or being our Ribbon Cutting Sponsor, contact Lori Oelrich at 651.288.9200.

Minimum Wage Increases to $9.50 per Hour
Among several other new laws, Minnesota's minimum wage will increase on August 1.  The state's large employers must pay at least $9.50 an hour, while smaller businesses will be required to pay $7.75. Training and youth wages must also be at least $7.75.
The law defines large businesses, which have to pay higher wages, as those with gross revenues of at least $500,000.  The new wages apply to all workers, full and part-time, regardless of how many hours they work.  Employers are not allowed to reduce wages when tips are provided to workers.
Minnesota's Department of Labor and Industry says that workers exempt from the state minimum-wage law include babysitters and nonprofit organization volunteers.
In 2018, Minnesota minimum wages begin rising annually to match inflation.

Did You Know?
Have you ever wondered whose idea it was to start collecting federal income tax? President Abraham Lincoln. On August 5, 1861, Lincoln signed the Revenue Act in law. It was an emergency measure during the Civil War. Congress repealed the act in 1871 but passed the 16th Amendment in 1909 which started the federal income tax system we use today. Read more.
Second Meeting Date Set to Outline Hwy. 110 Construction

MnDOT has scheduled a second meeting, in conjunction with your Chamber, for businesses that will be affected by the 2017 construction project on Highway 110 in Mendota Heights. Unfortunately, this construction will cause added congestion and at times may make it difficult for customers to get to some businesses in the area. DCR Chamber president, Vicki Stute, will talk about ways to promote your business to help ensure that these businesses are successful during the construction.

MnDOT will provide an overview of the project and has included a business tab on the project website that offers a business guidebook to help your business navigate the construction season, detour maps as the project nears and graphics that can be used on social media to help ensure customers are able to reach your business during construction.

The meeting will be held on Thursday, August 11 from 8:00 a.m. - 9:30 a.m. at Mendota Heights City Hall.

Member Spotlight: Grateful for Peer Network
Ann Bailey, DARTS
I am the President of DARTS, a nonprofit agency serving older adults and their families in and around Dakota County. Our services help people live independently, assist those caring for older adults and volunteer opportunities for people of all ages. I began participating in Chamber events about a year ago and found an instant community with Chamber members. The Coffee Breaks, lunches and Why Not Wednesdays are great ways to hear what's happening and have resulted in new DARTS partners, volunteers and supporters. I use the Weekly Update information to stay current with legislative and economic news and value the personal connections to leaders. I am so grateful for this peer network where I can exchange ideas, seek help and become more embedded in the community.
