THE DAY AFTER…
No doubt about it, Easter Sunday is a highlight of the year. From the “not-so-wonderful” early morning weather (it turned out okay) to the full sanctuary of adults and children at 10 AM, I thank God for the opportunity Easter provides all churches to share the gospel message of good News and see people that are new or haven’t been around in a bit. I thank God for everyone who has found a home here at Pilgrim Church of Duxbury, United Church of Christ!
It is always a blessing to me to watch our church family invest extra time and energy to share the meaning of our faith in the days leading up to Easter. From the Lenten Soup Suppers (thank you Diaconate and all who provide soup and bread), to Palm Sunday (thank you Choir and Sunday School) Maundy Thursday (thank you Choir and Confirmation Class and Diaconate) and all of our special Lenten Devotional Readers each Sunday. And of course, we have to thank our church staff (Melissa, Angelique, Claire, Patti, Gerard and Dawn) for all of their efforts leading up to Easter. And it is, of course, a joy to see people singing and enjoying the music on Easter Sunday itself, in a warm and sunny sanctuary. Another blessing of the weekend is receiving texts from other pastors and seeing reports on Twitter of people watching us online. I love hearing how God is working through local churches around the world.
If you’re like me, however, on the day after Easter Sunday, you are exhausted, and your mind is spinning. There is so much to rejoice in…and so much to do as follow up. And coupled with physical and emotional exhaustion, it’s easy to lose focus. It is easy for your mind to go to the guests who didn’t come, the goals you didn’t reach, or the part of your sermon that you don’t think came out clearly.
You’re tired, but God is not. Jesus’ resurrection is proof that God can do anything…and that God isn’t dependent on us to do it. Take time for yourself, after fully expending yourself in a large event, it is good for you to rest, and it is good for your relationships with your partners, families and self-care. If you schedule some extra family time this week, do it!
If there is ever a day which should find Christians rejoicing in a risen Savior, it is not just on Easter Sunday. It is every day. It is today.
He is still Risen!
Alleluia!
RB.
