I was never great at math. But I’ve been pondering a calculation from Paul’s letter to the Romans. He says where sin (our separation from God) increases, grace increases all the more.

That’s strange math. It means grace doesn’t just match what we bring, it exceeds it. Every time. By a lot.

I’ve met people who walked away from their faith because they felt too far gone. Too many mistakes. Too many years of running in the wrong direction. Too much harm seen, taken, and spoken using God to justify unethical or evil acts and behavior. The math didn’t seem to work in their favor.

But that’s exactly the math Paul is arguing against. Grace isn’t a journal that has to balance. It’s more like a stream that keeps rising.

Friends, whatever you’re carrying into this spring, whatever you’ve done or left undone or broken along the way, the streams of grace are still rising. And it’s rising toward you.

A PRAYER FOR PEACE IN IRAN

 God of All Nations,

We come to you with heavy hearts as conflict shadows the land of Iran and its neighbors. In the face of rising fear and the drums of war, we cling to your promise: “For the Spirit God gave us does not make us timid, but gives us power, love and self-discipline.”

(2 Timothy 1:7)

Grant us the Power not to destroy, but to protect. May that same power move the hearts of leaders to silence the weapons and seek the difficult, holy work of de-escalation. We pray for the families in Iran and Israel, for the children in shelters, and for the soldiers on all sides. We pray for our service men and women and their families as they worry about loved ones at home and the enormity of the tasks they are being held to accomplish. Remind us that every person in the path of this war is your beloved child, worthy of safety and a future.

Grant us Self-Discipline to resist the impulse of retaliation. Strengthen our resolve to be "Just Peace" makers, choosing the restraint of diplomacy over the chaos of violence.

In this hour of crisis, do not let us be timid in our pursuit of justice. May your Spirit breathe through the halls of power and the streets of every city until the "spiral of violence" is broken and your peace reigns.

Amen.

Easter Flowers

As we look ahead to the celebration of Easter, you can order a lily or bulbs to dedicate in honor or memory of loved ones and to help beautify the sanctuary on Easter. You can fill out the form below or use the Sunday bulletin insert to let the office know what plant you would like, how you would like the dedication to read, and whether you want to pick up your plant or donate it. Donated plants will be delivered to church members to let them know they are in our thoughts and prayers.

If you are able to assist in plant deliveries after the Easter service, just come to the front of the sanctuary and pick a delivery card. Your thoughtfulness is appreciated.
