WHAT IS “THE BEST YOU?”
Mid-January has come and for many, the seasonal disorder is in effect. Those who love the outdoors revel in the snow, the slopes, etc., and others bundle up against the “brr…”. But there is definitely a feeling of mid-winter blahs that approach after the holiday effect simmers down an the chill enters the air with a bit more frequency.
I was in kind of that sleep, not asleep, stage the other night, thinking about someone in our church who has not been here for a while. And I turned inward and started to feel bad that I had not reached out to them, thinking, “This is not the best you."
Ministry is trying at times, and is definitely not a one person vocation, especially in a church our size, buy I started asking myself more often, “Is this your best you?” This led me to the question, 'What is your best you?'
For me, it’s regular worship planning, some ideas work, others fall to the wayside. Its reading scripture and commentaries, trying to learn new things that I had not previously considered in the stories of our faith. It’s reaching out as often as I can, its praying for those who are in need, its thanking those who share their own time in ministry to our church and beyond . And my “best you” includes family time, which I do not seem to be able to get enough of with three active wonderful sons who are busy living their own best selves with their partners and their children.
YOUR “BEST YOU” is when you love people. Love is the greatest act we can do, and the strongest tool in our tool belt. Jesus told His disciples (us included) in John 13:34-35, "A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this all will know that you are My disciples, if you love one another." Faith in God is an invitation. Loving others is a command. Faith is an option but showing love is not. If you choose the one, you must do the other.
What is your BEST YOU?
