The Legacy of Kindness
Yesterday, we learned of the passing of Dolly Parton. The tributes being offered are amazing. The impact she had on so many people is so heartwarming. I hope you have had the opportunity to hear of her generosity. She was an extraordinary singer, songwriter, actress, businesswoman—and, perhaps most importantly, a person who understood the power of kindness.
Dolly often said that she wanted to be remembered as someone who “tried to do some good in the world.” And she certainly did. Through her “Imagination Library”, she helped put millions of books into the hands of children. She supported education, medical research, disaster relief, and countless other causes.
But perhaps her greatest gift was reminding us that kindness is never too small.
The prophet Micah asks: “What does God require of you but to do justice, love kindness, and walk humbly with your God?”(Micah 6:8)
Dolly Parton seemed to understand that you don't have to change the whole world to make the world better. Sometimes you simply help one child. You encourage one person. You make someone laugh. You give when you can. You leave a little more goodness behind than you found. That is a pretty good definition of a life well lived.
And perhaps that is something worth remembering this week: We may not all have Dolly Parton’s voice, talent, or rhinestones—but every one of us has the ability to be kind.
May we honor her legacy not simply by remembering her, but by carrying a little of that kindness forward. Because in the end, the greatest legacy any of us can leave is the good we have done for others.
