Community News & Updates

Be a Foodware Aware Business

In the fall of 2019, the City adopted that Ordinance 504 requires food and beverage providers located within the City of Solana Beach to have customers ask for accessory foodware items (such as utensils, napkins, straws, condiments and other items) before distributing them. Additionally, Ordinance 504 also prohibits the use of polystyrene foam containers for food. However, as the COVID-19 pandemic brought unprecedented challenges to restaurants, the City did not focus on enforcement of this new ordinance. In the meantime, California passed AB 1276 that resembles the City's ordinance, but makes these requirements regarding single-use foodware accessories effective statewide.

As Solana Beach emerges from the pandemic, the community has the opportunity to return to normalcy in a more sustainable fashion. The City would like to remind food businesses that polystyrene foam food containers cannot be used and that accessory foodware items should not be provided to a customer unless they specifically request them. Please pay special attention to orders made online or through third party delivery services, as there is no need to put utensils into the to-go bag unless a customer specifically adds utensils to their online order. By sticking to these requests, you will save money and the planet!

Safe Routes to School Program

The City has been working on a “Safe Routes to School Program” to assess the transportation challenges for students and parents as they commute to and from schools throughout the City. Some of the goals of the Program are to identify specific enhancements to the City’s existing roadway network for a safer and more comfortable commute with emphasis on walking and bicycling options for Solana Beach schoolchildren, their families and residents. Public outreach is a main component of this Program. In addition to updates at City Council meetings, school-based mobility assessments were held at each school last year and information was handed out during Fiesta Del Sol in May 2022.

As the crowd gathers for the Hullabaloo Concert at the Cove on August 18, 2022 from 4:00 to 6:00 pm, a concert which will feature organic kids folk music, the City’s consultant will be set up to provide more information on the Safe Routes to School Program and solicit feedback from kids and their parents about walking and bicycling improvements near their schools. Come early to provide your feedback and then stay to enjoy the concert.

Community Advisory: Gas Line Replacement

San Diego Gas & Electric (SDG&E) is preparing to replace the existing gas line along a few streets in the northeast corner of the City. The work will occur along Highland Drive between Lomas Santa Fe Drive and El Camino Real (note that the north City limit ends between San Mario and El Camino Real), the entire length of San Mario Drive, the entire length of Santa Elena Court, Santa Sabina Court, Santa Marta Court, as well as a segment of Santa Petra from San Mario to Santa Luisa Drive. The work will consist of removing the existing gas line in these streets, trenching in the streets and sidewalk and installing new gas lines in the streets along with new service laterals to all the homes previously connected to the old gas line.

The project is still going through the permitting process so the exact date the project will start is unknown at this time. Once a construction start date has been determined, the City will provide another notification through the E-Newsletter system. Please direct all questions regarding this work to the City of Solana Beach Engineering Department at [email protected].
