Dear Holy Name Families,

As we end this week, we have some sad news to share. Ed Petersen, affectionately known as "Mr. Ed," passed away after a long illness. Ed joined the Holy Name staff in 2006 and assisted with drop-off at the Early Childhood Center initially. For the following 16 years, Ed also assisted with recess supervision and helped with projects around the school increasing his daily time at the school until his retirement in 2022. Holy Name and the students brought him great joy. He was often in the stands at Little League games to see HNPS students play.

Ed's family will hold a private funeral service and a memorial mass will be held at a later date. We will share information about the mass once it is available. We are grateful for the time Ed shared with our school community and offer his family our deepest condolences.

This week students had a chance to learn about elections. After a week of campaigning, chicken nuggets pulled out a victory over pizza in the election for best lunch entree. Thank you to the 5th and 6th graders for managing the campaigns, polling, and coordinating the election. See below for some of their reflections on what they learned in this social studies project.

In November, our students are focusing on gratitude in Character Strong. Reflections and notes of thanks are being shared with one another and posted on bulletin boards.

We thank all of our veterans for their service to our country as we celebrate Veterans Day on Monday.

Have a great weekend.

Best regards,

Mr. Daniel Chisholm

Principal

Moments Captured this Week at HNPS

Shark Tank! Mr. Hastings' fourth graders embarked on an entrepreneurial adventure! The students were tasked with a project that connected to the region they were exploring, focusing on its resources and landforms. Each group developed a unique business idea and presented it to the panel, resembling the format of the Shark Tank show. The students delivered business presentations to the panel with the goal of securing their backing and investment in their products. Successful Future entrepreneurs!

The Bake Sale was a huge success, raising over $2200, and clearly reflected the hard work and dedication of everyone involved! Our 6th graders took initiative by creating posters, assisting with setup, baking, and volunteering to sell the baked goods. Their dedication to the process was truly impressive to see! A big thank you to everyone who contributed by baking, and a special acknowledgment to Doctor Madhuri for her efforts as the coordinator and chairperson! The funds raised will help defray the 6th Grade cost of their field trip to Camp Eisner in May.

Election: Pizza vs. Chicken Nuggets

Students in Mr. Reilly's 5th grade social studies class wrote recaps of the mock election. Sophia L.'s is below. Click the link below to read additional summaries.

These past two weeks, we learned about the differences between the popular vote and the electoral college. We started our own election using the electoral college and popular vote. Our election was chicken nuggets versus pizza. We made campaign advertisements and hung them around the school. We polled each classroom and found out that each day the polling changed. In the end chicken nuggets won but it was very close. If 6 people voted for pizza then pizza would've won. We also made predictions of how the presidential election would turn out. This was a great learning experience.
