Massachusetts is seeing a spike in Mycoplasma Pneumonia and Pertussis cases primarily in adolescence and school age children. Please see below for information on management and prevention of these respiratory infections.
Mycoplasma Pneumonia
Symptoms: Persistent cough, fever, fatigue
Treatment: Antibiotics such as Azithromycin, Doxycycline or Fluoroquinolone
Prevention: Staying home when you are sick, proper hand and respiratory hygiene
Pertussis or “whooping cough”
Symptoms: Mild respiratory symptoms that may progress to severe paroxysmal cough. Children often appear well between paroxysmal episodes. The cough is often worse at night. Cyanosis and apnea can occur. Fever is usually absent or mild.
Treatment: Early treatment with Azythromycin can shorten symptom duration and limit spread of disease
Prevention: Individuals who test positive for Pertussis and symptomatic close contacts should be excluded from public activities and complete 5 days of antibiotic treatment. Vaccination for those who are eligible is strongly encouraged
In addition to Mycoplasma and Pertussis, Influenza, Covid, and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) will circulate throughout the fall and winter months. Please test, treat and vaccinate your families to help prevent the spread of these illnesses.
