Grade 4 Immigration Unit — Our fourth graders recently completed a meaningful, student‑led Immigration Unit. Each student chose a country to research and explored why people leave their homeland (push factors) and what draws them to a new place (pull factors) — things like safety, better jobs, economic stability, education, and a fresh start.
Students created personalized “suitcases” filled with items immigrants might bring: spices, family recipes, tools, clothing, photos, and other keepsakes. These hands‑on projects helped students connect emotionally with stories of migration and consider what people choose to carry when starting a new life.
With guidance from Mr. Hastings, the class also examined how immigrant cultures have shaped the United States — from food and language to traditions and crafts. The unit strengthened research, writing, and presentation skills while fostering empathy and cultural awareness.
We’re proud of the students’ thoughtful work and the conversations it sparked!
