Sea King Sunday Update

Dear Sea King Families,

This week, PVHS welcomed the Class of 2027 to our annual Open House event. It was an amazing night to show off what makes PVHS special. Our students, faculty, and staff really made our Sea King family proud as they shared their accomplishments, passions, and talents with the incoming 9th-grade families. We so appreciate everyone's contributions to making this night a success. A special thank you to our student speakers who shared their PVHS experience with the audience. Our outstanding line-up in the gym this year included our Chinese program with their drum performance, Musical Theater with a preview of Something Rotten, and performances from JV Song and Cheer, Choreo, and Varsity Song and Cheer.

Our theme for this year was This is Palos Verdes High School, which can be seen throughout all of our videos, lookbook, and presentations.

This year's lookbook was again created by our brilliant student newspaper, The Point. The book highlights various aspects of PVHS through the voice of our students. Click HERE to check out this outstanding magazine! Additionally, our phenomenal Live from 205 students created their annual videos to showcase our high school programs. Click HERE to view this year's videos. I really appreciate the work of our students and their advisors from both of these programs. Their contributions to our school each year are so appreciated.

Thank you to everyone for their hard work, help, and support with this event! It once again highlighted what makes our Sea King family so special.

I hope you enjoy your Super Bowl Sunday and Happy Valentine's Day.

See you around campus Sea Kings!

Sincerely,

Dr. Trista Ramirez

Principal

Capitol Convoy Students Begin their Training

PVHS Students began their rigorous training last Tuesday night as they prepare for the annual Capitol Convoy trip to the state capitol in Sacramento.

Capitol Convoy is a unique PTSA program sponsored by the Palos Verdes

Peninsula Council of PTAs that our students are incredibly fortunate to be a part of. The program is designed to acquaint PVPUSD students with advocacy and the legislative process. PVPUSD is the only school district in California that sends a convoy (typically 65-70 people) to Sacramento each year in March to advocate on various issues pertaining to education and our district. It is a great opportunity for students to gain hands-on experience in civic engagement.

This year, students from Palos Verdes High School, Peninsula, and Rancho Del Mar went through a rigorous application and interview process for a chance to be selected to go on the trip. The Convoy departs early on March 7th for Sacramento starting two jam-packed days of civic engagement including a tour of the capitol, lunch with Assembly Member Al Muratsuchi, observing an Education Committee Hearing, attending a presentation by Senator Ben Allen, and several other legislative appointments.

On Tuesday night, students in the convoy were incredibly fortunate to receive training from our amazing Superintendent himself, Dr. Alex Cherniss, on how state funding for education works in California and how those funds are allocated throughout the district. Students were further fortunate to receive training from Rolling Hills Estates Council member, Frank Zerunyan, who is a professor of the practice of governance and the Director of Executive Education of governance at USC.

We are incredibly proud of these PVHS students for their hard work and dedication to advocating for all students in our district. We are fortunate to have such tremendous support from PVPUSD and our fabulous PVHS PTSA.

A special shoutout to PVHS 7th VP, Mrs. Erin Mone, for her tireless work in organizing this amazing opportunity for PVHS students. You are appreciated!

This week's student spotlight goes out to PVHS Junior, Kyleigh Cunningham.

Struggling with a severe nut allergy for most of her life, Kyleigh Cunningham was inspired to do something. Just over two years ago, she heard of a 2-Year Tolerance Induction Program through the So Cal Food Allergy Institute that would help individuals struggling with severe allergies. Kylie joined the program and found the program to be immensely helpful in abating her severe allergies. Over the last three months, Kylie has felt she has conquered her severe allergies, something that has brought her immense peace of mind.

To help other people like her, Kylie started a non-profit named Goodies for Allergies (Instagram: goodiesforallergies) to support other kids with life threatening allergies.

She makes bracelets and all proceeds go to the So Cal Food Allergy Institute. Kyleigh hopes her story will inspire others!

PVHS Math Club Travels to Compete... and Enjoys doing so!

Last week the PVHS Math Club travelled to South Pasadena High School to compete in the Bay Math League Competition against a dozen other South Bay schools.

The team members love the chance to challenge themselves and compete in all levels math. Congratulations to Eugene Lee and Anthony Yoon for great scores, and thank you to Eugene for teaching the other team members how to find all the factors of large numbers.

The last Bay Math League competition is coming up and it will be local - March 15 at South High. Come join the fun and share your aptitude and love of math with friends.

Math Club meets most Mon and Thu at lunch in Room 514!
