Now is the Time: A Study Guide for ELCA Declaration to People of African Descent

Congregations are invited to wrestle with the meaning of the declaration, adopted at the 2019 Churchwide Assembly, and its accompanying explanation.

In the declaration, the ELCA “apologizes to people of African descent for its historical complicity in slavery and its enduring legacy of racism in the United States and globally. We lament the white church’s failure to work for the abolition of slavery and the perpetuation of racism in this church.”

“Now Is the Time” stresses realism, self-examination and accountability as the church acknowledges and apologizes for the history and impact of slavery and systemic racism in the United States and globally. The study guide focuses on deepening our understanding of this history as participants engage in often-difficult conversation and reflection to move the church toward racial healing and justice.

The five-part study resource, with a guide and participant materials, is available at Perhaps your congregation will use this resource this winter or Lent?

2022 ELCA Youth Gathering Canceled

We hold the ELCA Youth Gathering Leadership - and all of our youth and youth leaders - in prayer following this news.

ELCA Youth Gathering states: "We know there are thousands of young people who will not get to experience the Gathering, and our hearts break for them. This was not an easy decision, and we ask for your prayers and your grace. We understand the impact this decision will have on our youth, volunteers and planning teams, and we hope to return to Minneapolis for a future Gathering."

The announcement emphasized the ELCA's commitment "to supporting the young people of our church and to seeing that the ministry of the Gathering, MYLE and the tAble continue for years to come."

The 2024 Gathering will take place July 16-20, 2024, with the Multicultural Youth Leadership Event (MYLE) and the tAble taking place July 13-16, 2024.
The location will be announced this summer.

Fresh Expressions: New Ways of Being Church

Half Day LiVE Retreat - open to all!
Saturday, February 12, 9am to 1pm
at Trinity Lutheran Church in Lynnwood

Who is welcome? Any and all congregational leaders looking to expand your imagination and practice of new forms of church!

After two years of pandemic living, many are asking questions about how to connect in a time of covid. We have not stopped being church, in the Spirit, we are being guided into new forms of church. For a few years now, new innovative and experimental forms of church gatherings have been bubbling up, and we’d like to invite a mutual conversation around these new forms of practicing church. From practitioners in our synod, we’ll be curious about new forms of church models like Dinner Church and Wild Church. Our time will involve “how to” experiential practice, as much as thoughtful reflection. for what it means to be church in complex times.
Cost is $30/person* - register here:

*NO COST for those already part of the 2021-2022 Cohort
Simply let know that you will be attendingthe half-day retreat.

Thank you to our Facilitators:

The Truth About Palestine: An Evening with Tamar Haddad

Sunday, February 27, 7pm-8pm
Tamar Haddad, author of The Future of Palestine: How Discrimination Hinders Change, is a recent ELCA International Women Leaders scholarship recipient and graduate of California Lutheran University. She is serving this year as the Youth Minister and Children's Choir Director for Christ Lutheran Church in Ferndale.
In this evening on Zoom, Tamar will share stories of growing up as a Palestinian Christian, explain why it's important to understand the realities in Palestine--especially of those who are overlooked or silenced--and discuss Christian Zionism. Our synod's Strategic Team for Authentic Diversity heard a similar presentation in January and thought the whole synod could benefit from Tamar's experiences.
All synod congregations, ministries, and individuals are invited to attend the Zoom presentation. Tamar will speak for 30-40 minutes and leave 20-30 minutes for questions. Please contact Pr. Jana Schofield with questions about the presentation:
