ITLC/TWC joined the ATU for its General Convention on September 19-23 in Las Vegas, Nevada, sharing with their members and leadership information about its resources and exchanging ideas. Executive Director Jack Clark, Senior Communications Specialist David Stephen, and Program Manager for Technical Training James Hall attended the week-long event. Speakers at the convention included Pres. Joe Biden (by video) and Secretary of Labor Marty Walsh. The convention capped off with the election of the ATU International President, International Executive Vice President, International Secretary-Treasurer, and International Vice Presidents. While there, Jack and David joined ATU Director of Apprenticeship and Workforce Development Jamaine and a delegation of ATU members for a tour of the Culinary Academy of Las Vegas and learned about how the Academy works to reduce poverty, eliminate unemployment with union jobs and provide vocational and job-readiness training to youth, adults, and displaced workers in 15 different programs in hospitality work, digital and employability skills, and language instruction. DOL Final Rule Update
On September 23, 2022, the U.S. Department of Labor announced a final rule to rescind the Industry-Recognized Apprenticeship Program (IRAP). The Final Rule will publish in the Federal Register on September 26, 2022, and will go into effect on November 25, 2022. Beginning on the effective date, DOL will no longer recognize Standards Recognized Entities (SREs) or IRAPs. SREs and IRAP sponsors are encouraged to consider registering their programs with DOL or a State Apprenticeship Agency (SAA). Such entities are encouraged to reach out to the Apprenticeship Director in their State to receive technical assistance and explore such options further. Public gets first glimpse at Caltrain’s new electric trainsets

Caltrain provided the first public viewing of its new electric train cars on Saturday, Sept. 24, at an event attended by federal, state, regional, local officials and community members. Caltrain calls the new train cars the centerpiece of its electrification project, which not only brings a new power source to the Caltrain fleet, but will also deliver an increase in service and train speeds.
