The Coronado Public Library kicks off the City’s 2022 Community Read program with a concert of 1930s-style jazz and big-band standards on the Library Lawn on Saturday, April 2. The Coronado Big Band concert will begin at 3 p.m. and is the first of a number of planned events for this year’s selected book, “West with Giraffes” by Lynda Rutledge. The novel is inspired by the true story of two giraffes who made headlines and won the hearts of Depression-era America. The highlight of the monthlong celebration is an evening with the book’s author on Thursday, April 7. Rutledge will discuss her inspiration for the book and research about the two giraffes who miraculously survive a hurricane while crossing the Atlantic then go on a 12-day road trip to the San Diego Zoo. Other Community READ events include book discussions, art activities for children, storytime with the San Diego Zoo, teen events, lectures and talks. The City Council laid out the scope of work in January 2021. After considering the narrow sidewalks made nearly impassable in places with open car doors, people unloading beach equipment, walkers, runners, bicyclists, strollers, and dogs on leashes. A design was approved last August that would widen the sidewalk to provide 8 feet of clear pedestrian space. The Council direction was intended to strike an appropriate balance between desired improvements and the project costs. Approved design features include six curb bulb-outs on the west side of Ocean Boulevard, which will be constructed without reducing on-street parking. Pavement striping improvements along Ocean Boulevard will include high visibility ladder-style crosswalks to replace the traditional two-stripe crosswalks and “share the road” pavement stencils, also known as sharrows, to be installed in both travel lanes of Ocean Boulevard to remind drivers that cyclists may use the full travel lane.

The City is hosting its second virtual workshop on Coronado’s Sea Level Rise planning process. The City invites the community to attend the workshop via Zoom at 5 p.m. on April 21 to learn more. The first step was a Vulnerability Assessment that used a model to evaluate how sea level rise could impact the City over time. A Vulnerability Study was completed and presented to the public last summer. The City recently released the second planning document, the Adaptation Plan, which includes a menu of potential strategies. The meeting will review the Vulnerability Study but focus on the adaptation measures. The combined draft Sea Level Rise Vulnerability Assessment and Adaptation Plan document is available on CommentCoronado.org. Organics Recycling Update: Notices will soon be mailed to all multi-family and commercial businesses to provide information on how to initiate organics collection services. Organics Waste Reductions legislation went into effect in January of 2022 requiring all residents and businesses to separate organic material (e.g. food waste, yard waste) from trash and other non-organic recyclables (bottles, cans and cardboard). EDCO, the City’s waste hauler, will be sending out the notices. EDCO is available to assist businesses and multi-family dwellings with determining the appropriate level of organics collection services to best meet their needs. Upon service enrollment, EDCO will provide residents or businesses with the appropriately sized green cart or green bin where they can collect all organics materials. Green containers will serve as a repository for all organic materials, including meat, bones, dairy, prepared food, food-soiled paper, and green waste. Green containers will then be serviced on a weekly frequency based upon need, similar to the current trash and recycling collection schedule. Small Water Main Replacement: California American Water’s contractor continues work this week on a project to replace water mains along Sixth Street. Initial tasks included staging equipment to the eastern shoulder of Glorietta Boulevard, where it will be stored during the work. Excavation work for lateral connections has begun on Sixth from about A Avenue to Glorietta Boulevard. There may be some traffic delays during work activities, which should be completed by May 20.

Flower Show Talk: The 100th anniversary of the Coronado Flower Show is the topic of a Coronado Floral Association meeting at the Coronado Public Library on Saturday, April 2, from 10:30 to noon. Join the Coronado Floral Association each month to learn about a new floral topic. Membership is not required, all anthophiles, or people who love flowers, are welcome to attend. This month's topic is “Celebrating 100 Years of the Coronado Flower Show.” Hear about how the show is organized.

Arbor Day 'Plant a Tree' Event Update: More than 100 people gathered in celebration of Arbor Day 2022 to plant trees last weekend. The celebration was held early due to many events planned for the weeks leading up to Arbor Day, which is April 29. The City provided tools and instructions for the plantings. The City of Coronado Street Tree Committee and Public Services & Engineering staff worked together to plant about 30 trees this year. The City of Coronado has been a "Tree City USA" since 1984. The program recognizes cities that work to maintain and grow their urban forests. The City has more than 8,500 trees it manages all around Coronado.

Coronado Golf Course Spring Maintenance: The Coronado Golf Course will be closed Tuesday, April 5, through Friday, April 8. The driving range and Feast and Fareway will be open normal operating hours. We thank you for your patience during this time as we work to maintain this beautiful facility for your use.

Crafting Night at the Spreckels Center: Design three custom handmade birthday cards with local crafter Sherry Hughes Richter on Wednesday, April 13, at 6 p.m. All card materials will be provided. If you have a paper cutter/trimmer and scissors, please bring them to the event. Adhesive will be provided by the instructor. Aquatics Spring Swim Lessons: Spring swim lessons are open for registration for different ages and skill levels.

Summer Brochure 2022 Update: Detailed registration information for Recreation’s summer programming and dates to remember will be included in a postcard that residents should expect to receive starting April 6. The Summer Brochure will be posted online on April 13. Online registration opens for residents at 9 a.m. on May 4, at 9 a.m. Registration for everyone begins at 9 a.m. on May 18, including online, in person and by phone at (619) 522-7342.

Breakfast with the Easter Bunny: Get your tickets for the annual Breakfast with the Easter Bunny event . The event will be held in the Nautilus room at 9 a.m. on Saturday, April 16. Enjoy a breakfast buffet, Easter crafts, games, a visit with the Easter Bunny, and a fun Easter Egg Hunt. Bring your camera and an Easter basket. Tickets for children 12 and under are $12, and $16 for everyone else. Call (619) 522-7342 beginning March 1 to purchase tickets.

Florals by Locals: The Coronado Cultural Arts Commission is calling local artists to submit artwork with a floral theme for inclusion in an exhibition and sale of art in the 2022 Coronado Flower Show to be held the weekend of April 23-24. This year will be the Flower Show's 100th Anniversary. Back again after the 2019 lockdown, the Commission will once again mount an exhibition to highlight the work of local artists at the annual community flower show. To apply, visit the Florals by Locals Call to Artists on the Commission's website. Application deadline is 5:00 p.m. on April 12, 2022. There is no fee this year to enter.
