Ocean Boulevard Street, Sidewalk Improvements Update
The contractor on a project to make major improvements to Ocean Boulevard will complete the sidewalk concrete pours this week. Crews also will form and pour a pedestrian bulb-out at the intersection of Ocean Boulevard and Loma Avenue. A bulb-out is a curb extension that reduces the effective street width to make it safer to cross. Street light foundations are expected to be constructed by the end of the week and light poles will be relocated within a few weeks. This first phase of construction is planned to be completed by Wednesday, April 13. The next phase of work will occur between Isabella Avenue and Alameda Boulevard. The entire project includes relocation of lights and street furniture, and installation of new curb, gutter, sidewalk, and pedestrian ramps. This will be followed by an asphalt overlay of Ocean Boulevard, all to improve acccess and pedestrian mobility on the sidewalk along the ocean side of the roadway.

The City Council laid out the scope of work in January 2021. After considering the narrow sidewalks made nearly impassable in places with open car doors, people unloading beach equipment, walkers, runners, bicyclists, strollers, and dogs on leashes. A design was approved last August that would widen the sidewalk to provide 8 feet of clear pedestrian space. The Council direction was intended to strike an appropriate balance between desired improvements and the project costs. Approved design features include six curb bulb-outs on the west side of Ocean Boulevard, which will be constructed without reducing on-street parking. Pavement striping improvements along Ocean Boulevard will include high visibility ladder-style crosswalks to replace the traditional two-stripe crosswalks and “share the road” pavement stencils, also known as sharrows, to be installed in both travel lanes of Ocean Boulevard to remind drivers that cyclists may use the full travel lane.
The work is expected to be completed by Memorial Day. Traffic and access will be impacted. Find out more about the project on CommentCoronado.org.

Spring 'Bike Rodeos' at Schools to Highlight e-Bike Safety
The City is co-hosting three bicycle safety clinics, called Bike Rodeos, this month, April 13, 14 and 19 at various schools around Coronado. The rodeos are for all students who ride bikes but there will be a special emphasis on those with e-bikes. Electric bikes have become very popular among Coronado youth who have been using them to get to school in growing numbers. E-bikes are fast due to their motors and there are special rules riders should know to ensure everyone’s safety. The City, Coronado Unified School District, San Diego Bicycle Coalition, and Coronado MainStreet invite students and parents to attend one of three bike rodeos to learn about the rules of the road, register bikes and enter raffle contests. See dates and locations below. Thanks Garage Buona Forchetta, Holland’s Bicycles, Gepetto’s and Blue Bridge Hospitality for co-sponsoring this important event.

Free Summer Shuttle Program Offers Interior Ad Space
Coronado is offering interior advertising space for sale on the City’s popular Free Summer Shuttle buses to local businesses and groups. Four shuttles will operate this summer from Friday, May 27, to Monday, Sept. 5. Ads are highly visible during the three-month program and seen by an estimated 1,000 riders per day. They are an effective way to reach visitors as well as locals. Ads may promote Coronado tourism and the community, and can include services, products and events that appeal to residents and visitors, such as special events, local history and culture, local art and artists, and offerings from local businesses and retail stores where visitors can shop. Ads are displayed for a minimum of one month. They must comply with the stated goals of the Coronado Summer Shuttle program and Metropolitan Transit System advertising regulations. Cost is $125 per month per ad per bus for organizations and businesses, and $75 for nonprofit groups. Ad specifications and deadlines and the order form can be found on CommentCoronado.org. The City offers the free shuttle service to reduce vehicle trips along the Orange Avenue corridor during the peak summer season, and is sponsored by the City and Discover Coronado. For more information, call Howard Lee at (619) 522-2423.

Second Sea Level Rise Virtual Workshop Set for April 21
The City is hosting its second virtual workshop on Coronado’s Sea Level Rise planning process. The City invites the community to attend the workshop via Zoom at 5 p.m. on April 21 to learn more. The first step was a Vulnerability Assessment that used a model to evaluate how sea level rise could impact the City over time. A Vulnerability Study was completed and presented to the public last summer. The City recently released the second planning document, the Adaptation Plan, which includes a menu of potential strategies. The meeting will review the Vulnerability Study but focus on the adaptation measures. The combined draft Sea Level Rise Vulnerability Assessment and Adaptation Plan document is available on CommentCoronado.org. Please provide any comments to Project Planner Jane Thornton at jthornton@coronado.ca.us by May 18.

Public Services & Engineering Project Updates
Organics Recycling Update: Notices will soon be mailed to all multi-family and commercial businesses to provide information on how to initiate organics collection services. Organics Waste Reductions legislation went into effect in January of 2022 requiring all residents and businesses to separate organic material (e.g. food waste, yard waste) from trash and other non-organic recyclables (bottles, cans and cardboard). EDCO, the City’s waste hauler, will be sending out the notices. EDCO is available to assist businesses and multi-family dwellings with determining the appropriate level of organics collection services to best meet their needs. Upon service enrollment, EDCO will provide residents or businesses with the appropriately sized green cart or green bin where they can collect all organics materials. Green containers will serve as a repository for all organic materials, including meat, bones, dairy, prepared food, food-soiled paper, and green waste. Green containers will then be serviced on a weekly frequency based upon need, similar to the current trash and recycling collection schedule. Additional information can be found on the City’s website: Organics Recycling or by visiting EDCO Organics Recycling Information.
