Free Summer Shuttle Debuts May 27 with New Look, Same Fare
City leaders and sponsors of Coronado’s Free Summer Shuttle program invite the community to the 2022 season kick-off event on Friday, May 27, where a colorful new bus wrap will be introduced. The new wrap is a departure from the red vintage Volkswagen bus design that had covered the shuttle buses for the past six years. The design may feel familiar to many in the community as it is based on a public art mural installed on the old Cora Mart building until Vons started recent improvements. The kick-off event will be held on the first day of service on the Friday before Memorial Day at 10 a.m. at Spreckels Park. After the kick-off ceremony, the community is invited to take a ride. Light refreshments will be served. The City worked with Discover Coronado, which funds the wraps every year, to perfect the design. The mural is a wavy image of the word Coronado in all caps set on a background of shades of blue. Each letter contains an iconic image of the City such as the Hotel del Coronado, the Village Theatre and the beach.
The Free Summer Shuttle program will run from May 27 to Sept. 5. The City contracts with the Metropolitan Transit System to operate the Free Summer Shuttle for Village bus service at 15-minute intervals along the existing 904 Route. Buses run from 9 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. Sunday through Thursday, and one hour later Friday and Saturday. There will be free MTS day passes available for Coronado Cays residents and special service on the Fourth of July. Visit CommentCoronado.org for more details.
Bike Rodeos Attract Dozens of Student E-bike Riders
Dozens of students turned out at each of the first two bicycle safety clinics, called Bike Rodeos, this week. The City, Coronado Unified School District, San Diego Bicycle Coalition, and Coronado MainStreet co-hosted the Bike Rodeos at Village Elementary and Coronado Middle schools. There were a large number of students on e-bikes, which have become very popular with Coronado youth who ride them to school. Students enjoyed obstacle courses set up by the Bicycle Coalition, learned about how to properly wear a helmet, how to ride safely, and won prizes donated by Coronado MainStreet businesses. The Bike Rodeos help to reinforce safe riding skills for everyone and emphasized how dangerous faster e-bikes can be. One more Bike Rodeo is set for Tuesday, April 19, at 3 p.m. at Silver Strand Elementary School. The City thanks Garage Buona Forchetta, Holland’s Bicycles, Gepetto’s and Blue Bridge Hospitality for co-sponsoring the Bike Rodeos.

Cays Park Master Plan Project Update
The Coronado Cays Park Master Plan is on the City Council agenda for Tuesday, April 19, The Council approved a contract modification in December for the City’s consultant on the project, Van Dyke Landscape Architects, to return to the original planning process scope. This included the development of three master plan concepts that would be narrowed to one after robust community engagement to gather feedback. On Jan. 18, the Council received a revised project schedule, which was recently further refined with the latest time estimates, and directed that a discussion occur on field use at Cays Park and other Coronado parks once the data was presented. The discussion at the April 19 meeting on field use will help the Council provide direction to the consultant and staff on potential park design or programming considerations in developing the three master plan concepts. Boards, Commissions & Committees
Board, Commission and Committee Vacancies
There are currently no vacancies. However, the City of Coronado encourages, promotes and welcomes the participation of citizens in the decision-making process. The City has a number of standing citizen commissions, committees, and boards which provide public input to the City government of Coronado. Standing committees serve as an important link between the citizens of Coronado and the City Council by communicating values, attitudes and needs of the community within the special area of their group’s assignment. They are an integral part of the process, which contributes to sound government. There are more than 120 citizens presently serving the City on committees, giving generously of their time. The City benefits from the expertise and energy of these individuals. If you have any questions about volunteering, call the City Clerk’s Office at (619) 522-7320.
