City to Launch New Municipal Website May 9
The City is preparing to launch a new municipal website next month that is attractive, user-friendly and much improved. Work on the new website is wrapping up with some finishing touches after going through a redesign process by CivicPlus, a leading government website provider. Users will see a familiar but improved website, particularly a cleaner look and easier navigation. The Coronado City Council approved moving forward with the project in 2021 as the existing website is outdated. During the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic, reliable access to the City’s website was paramount but there was a days-long outage that showed the weaknesses in the site. A new website will improve information availability, maintain transparency, increase responsiveness, provide current information, and implement user-friendly navigation. The launch date for the new website is May 9. The Library and Coronado Cultural Arts will have stand-alone but linked websites. The Library will launch with the City’s website and look for Cultural Arts in mid-June. We are excited the project is nearing completion. Stay tuned for more details on the launch and what to expect.
Ocean Boulevard Street, Sidewalk Improvement Project Update
The main load-bearing layer of paving construction has been completed and the light pole foundations have been poured from Alameda Boulevard to Ocean Drive. The contractor on a project to improve access and pedestrian mobility on the west side of Ocean boulevard will next construct the curb and gutter in this section over the course of three days starting the week of April 25. The sidewalk from Alameda Boulevard to Ocean Drive will be poured the following week. Please use caution when driving through the area. Traffic and access will be impacted.
City Helps Celebrate 100th Year of Coronado Flower Show
New Season, New Look; Free Summer Shuttle Return May 27
Service on the Free Summer Shuttle begins on the Friday before the Memorial Day weekend with a kickoff event to introduce a colorful new bus wrap. The new wrap is based on a public art mural that was recently removed from the old Cora Mart building when Vons began its recent expansion into the space. The kickoff event will begin at 10 a.m. at Spreckels Park. After the ceremony, the community is invited to take a ride. Light refreshments will be served. Discover Coronado graciously funds the wraps every year and worked with the City on the design. The Free Summer Shuttle program will run from May 27 to Sept. 5. The City contracts with the Metropolitan Transit System to operate the Free Summer Shuttle for Village bus service at 15-minute intervals along the existing 904 Route. Buses run from 9 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. Sunday through Thursday, and one hour later Friday and Saturday. There will be free MTS day passes available for Coronado Cays residents and special service on the Fourth of July. Visit CommentCoronado.org for more details. It’s not too late to take advantage of interior advertising space offered on the City’s popular Free Summer Shuttle buses. Ad specifications and deadlines can be found on CommentCoronado.org.
Successful Bike Rodeos Teach Safety Skills, Rules of the Road
After a few years off due to the pandemic, Coronado Bike Rodeos were back in full effect at three school sites, with the last rodeo completed at Silver Strand Elementary earlier this week. Bike Rodeos also were held at Coronado Middle and Village Elementary schools. The City, Coronado Unified School District, San Diego County Bicycle Coalition, and Coronado MainStreet joined forces to teach students and parents about bike safety and rules of the road. Dozens of students at each school were given information on safe cycling, how to register bicycles, and an online biking resource on where and how to bike in Coronado safely and comfortably. They also won prized donated by Coronado MainStreet businesses. The Bike Rodeos emphasized electric bikes, which have become more prevalent among students. The City will continue to seek opportunities to partner and collaborate with local groups to encourage bike safety education, a strategy in the City’s Active Transportation Plan and Complete Streets Strategy. Thanks to Garage Buona Forchetta, Holland’s Bicycles, Gepetto’s and Blue Bridge Hospitality for co-sponsoring this year's Bike Rodeos.
Second Sea Level Rise Virtual Workshop Update
The City held a community workshop earlier this week via Zoom for residents interested in learning about the Draft Sea Level Rise Vulnerability Assessment and Adaptation Plan. There were 71 participants registered to attend the meeting. The recording and presentation materials will be available on the project website early next week. The public review period for the Draft Sea Level Rise Vulnerability assessment and Adaptation Plan continues until May 18 and comments on the document can be sent to Project Planner Jane Thornton at [email protected].

MotorCars on MainStreet Event Set for May 1
The 30th annual MotorCars on MainStreet event is set for Sunday, May 1. The event, which attracts custom car enthusiasts, will feature up to 400 pre-1973 restored classic, rod and custom cars and trucks. The event will be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in and around Coronado Rotary Park on Isabella and Orange avenues. Expect increased traffic and parking impacts. Affected residences and businesses near Isabella, Park Place and Star Park Circle will be notified in advance of the event, which is presented by Coronado MainStreet.
Cays Park Master Plan Project Update
  • one that maintains 100% of the open space area in the current park configuration;
  • a second one that maintains 75% of open space and explores up to 25% of other passive uses; and
  • a third one that is 50% active and 50% passive.
In December, the City Council agreed to restart the master planning effort to include development of three draft master plan alternatives and a transparent, comprehensive community outreach. The Council accepted a new schedule at its Jan. 18 meeting to complete the Coronado Cays Park Master Plan project. Originally begun in July 2019, the effort was halted from March 2020 through April 2021 due to the pandemic. The alternatives will be the subject of extensive community outreach to gather input once presented. The City will conduct two public workshops and an online survey available to all of Coronado. Based upon this feedback, a final Draft Master Plan will be developed and presented to the Coronado Cays Homeowners Association, the Parks and Recreation Commission and, finally, the City Council for approval. The City will provide regular updates on CommentCoronado.org and in the Weekly Update to notify the entire Coronado community of the process and provide information on how to stay up to date.
Public Services & Engineering Project Updates

Small Water Main Replacement: California American Water’s contractor continues to work on the replacement of the water main located along Sixth Street near Glorietta Boulevard. Although traffic lanes remain open in both directions during construction activities, this may cause an impact to traffic flow at Glorietta Boulevard and at Margarita Avenue. Excavation for lateral connections continues. Construction equipment is staged and stored along Glorietta.

Boards, Commissions & Committees
Board, Commission and Committee Vacancies
There are currently no vacancies. However, the City of Coronado encourages, promotes and welcomes the participation of citizens in the decision-making process. The City has a number of standing citizen commissions, committees, and boards which provide public input to the City government of Coronado. Standing committees serve as an important link between the citizens of Coronado and the City Council by communicating values, attitudes and needs of the community within the special area of their group’s assignment. They are an integral part of the process, which contributes to sound government. There are more than 120 citizens presently serving the City on committees, giving generously of their time. The City benefits from the expertise and energy of these individuals. If you have any questions about volunteering, call the City Clerk’s Office at (619) 522-7320.
