Vons Expansion Set for Completion in Mid-May
The Vons expansion into the old Cora Mart building is nearing completion. The grocery store has remained open during the construction project, which includes the new space and renovations to the existing space. Crews have installed and stocked aisles in the new 5,500-square-foot section, and customers may shop in the area. Vons began work on its expansion into the space last October. It also will include upgrades to nearly every department in the store. Two new public restrooms on the shopping floor are now open. The building’s façade will be enhanced with new exterior design, paint and three murals along Orange Avenue depicting iconic scenes of the Coronado lifestyle. Work is expected to be complete by mid-May.
Community Read 2022 Program Events
The highlight of a monthlong series of events related to the 2022 Coronado Community READ was an evening with the book’s author, which was held earlier this week. Lynda Rutledge discussed her inspiration for this year’s Community READ book, “West with Giraffes,” her writing process and research she conducted on the two giraffes who miraculously survive a hurricane while crossing the Atlantic then go on a 12-day road trip to the San Diego Zoo. The Coronado Public Library kicked off this year’s program on April 2 with a concert.

An event centered on the Community READ’s Teen Selection, “Turtle in Paradise,” also will feature its author, graphic novelist Jennifer L. Holm. Her other books include the Sunny and Babymouse series. Holm will discuss and sign her books from 2 to 3:30 p.m. in the Winn Room on Saturday, April 16.

Next Thursday,April 14, a University of San Diego professor will discuss the state of the world in 1938, the same time period as this year's Community READ and one that parallels the world we are living in today. Join the library for this one-hour discussion at 11 a.m. in the Winn Room on Thursday, April 14.

Other events include book discussions, art activities for children, storytime with the San Diego Zoo, teen events, lectures and talks. Visit the Library’s event calendar to find events by date for further details.

Crews Adding Pavement Markings Around Bayshore Bikeway
Public Services crews recently began stenciling more pavement markings along the Bayshore Bikeway in and around Tidelands Park. The public will see the yellow markings that encourage and promote courteous cycling and etiquette. The multi-use path accommodates a wide range of travel modes from walking, jogging, bicycles, electric bikes, scooters, surreys and skateboards for all ages and abilities. A few pavement markings went in a few weeks ago in preparation for more. The markings will continue to be installed throughout April and go from City Hall to Imperial Beach at key locations including parks, intersections and parking lots. When traveling along the scenic Bayshore Bikeway users should be aware of their surroundings, ride for the conditions, and limit travel speeds to ensure a safe experience for all that use the Bikeway.
Ocean Boulevard Street, Sidewalk Improvements Update
The contractor on a project to improve access and pedestrian mobility on the west side of Ocean Boulevard is beginning to work on multiple segments. This hopefully will increase productivity and complete construction as soon as possible. While work wraps up between R.H. Dana Place and Isabella Avenue (Segment 1), crews are beginning demolition operations between Marina Avenue and Ocean Drive (Segment 4). Those in the area will see various stages of work including sidewalk improvements, relocation of light poles and installation of new curb, gutter, sidewalk, and pedestrian ramps. This work will be followed by an asphalt overlay of Ocean Boulevard. The current sidewalk width is very small in some places. The City Council defined the scope of work in January 2021 to include sidewalk widening to provide 8 feet of clear pedestrian space in front of relocated street furniture placed at the back of the sidewalk. Additional design features include curb bulb-outs, which extend the sidewalk at crosswalks to reduce the effective street width to make it safer to cross, at six locations. The work is expected to be completed by Memorial Day. Traffic and access will be impacted.
Artists Banner Series Installed along Orange Avenue
Public Services crews have installed 30 new art banners on Orange Avenue this week from First Street to Avenida de las Arenas. This banner series celebrates Coronado artists and will be displayed through June. The City through its Cultural Arts Commission works to support local artists through the banner program. Discover Coronado sponsors the cost of the banner program, which includes production, installation and hardware. In addition to artists, the banner program also celebrates nonprofit organizations and festive holidays. The City is proud to support the 60-plus artists who have participated in the program over the last six years. Public Services & Engineering Project Updates
Small Water Main Replacement: California American Water’s contractor continues to work on the replacement of the water main located along Sixth Street. The contractor is excavating to add lateral connections while moving toward Glorietta Boulevard. Although traffic lanes remain open in both directions during construction activities, this may cause an impact to traffic flow at Pomona and Margarita avenues. Construction equipment is staged and stored along the eastern shoulder of Glorietta Boulevard.

Boards, Commissions & Committees
Board, Commission and Committee Vacancies
There are currently no vacancies. However, the City of Coronado encourages, promotes and welcomes the participation of citizens in the decision-making process. The City has a number of standing citizen commissions, committees, and boards which provide public input to the City government of Coronado. Standing committees serve as an important link between the citizens of Coronado and the City Council by communicating values, attitudes and needs of the community within the special area of their group’s assignment. They are an integral part of the process, which contributes to sound government. There are more than 120 citizens presently serving the City on committees, giving generously of their time. The City benefits from the expertise and energy of these individuals. If you have any questions about volunteering, call the City Clerk’s Office at (619) 522-7320.
