PVHS Students Make Nationals in TEAMS Competition
This year, two students approached PVHS teacher, Mrs. Maemoto, and asked if she would consider teaching a 7th period class to prepare students to participate in TEAMS. TEAMS(Tests of Engineering Aptitude, Mathematics, and Science) is an annual competition designed to help secondary students discover their STEM potential. In this competition, teams of 2-4 students apply their knowledge in practical, creative ways to solve real-world engineering challenges.
Given this was the first year this 7th period was available to Sea Kings, expectations were tempered as they competed for the first time as a class representing PVHS...
The Results:
Three of our four teams finished in the top 11 of California(the highest finish of any school in the South Bay), and qualified for Best-in-Nation Honors at the 2023 National TEAMS Competitions from 6/29 – 7/2 in Louisville, KY. Of those teams, one consisted of all female, freshmen students with only 3 members(max allowed was four members).
Needless to say, these remarkable students(and Mrs. Maemoto), achieved beyond any expectations anyone could have had!
We are so incredibly proud of this group who devoted their time and energy to prepare for this competition every Sunday and Mrs. Maemoto is especially proud of our two student leaders, David and Derek Su, who organized the group and provided the leadership and direction for weekly meetings.

Congratulations PVIT FRC TEAM!
The PVIT First Robotics team (FRC) had an incredible experience and competition at the San Diego Regional Competition during Spring Break. The team's scores in the qualifying rounds did not at all reflect their capability, and fortunately, the other teams recognized that. They were chosen to join the 5th Place Alliance for the playoffs and ultimately finished in 4th place after some very close matches. Congratulations to this FRC team who has had the most successful season of any previous years. We are extremely proud of the students who committed their time and energy to learn robotics and make solid contributions to the team.

A HUGE Congratulations to Palos Verdes High School senior, Janna Lee for her outstanding accomplishment in qualifying and receiving the $50,000 So Cal Edison Scholarship. The Edison Scholars Program awards this scholarship to a very select group of students who, in their words, are "the makers of tomorrow — the dreamers, inventors, guardians and pioneers — those who dare to be great." This year, Edison International, which sponsors Edison Scholars Program, awarded $50,000 college scholarships to only 30 high school seniors to help them follow their dreams in science, technology, engineering, or math (STEM) and empower them to change the world. For more information on Janna and the other 2023 Edison Scholars, CLICK HERE.
Janna credits her environmental journey to a biology project about desertification, the destruction of soil composition that creates famine. It is where the land becomes so barren that it is incapable of supporting farming or infrastructure. She became invested in this issue and joined the science research class at Palos Verdes High to start a two-year passion project. Her research supports delaying soil desertification by manipulating environmental factors like water pH and heat to investigate if elements like acid rain affect the environment. She is currently conducting research on collagens that will help further her research and hopes to continue by studying environmental science. Janna is planning to major in Environmental Science.
On Friday, the So Cal Edison President, Janna's family, and PVHS teachers and staff gathered in the College and Career Center to surprise Janna with this incredible accomplishment.
We are so proud of you Janna! You deserve it!

State and AP Testing in April and May
The testing season is upon us! Our Juniors will be participating in state testing in Science, English, and Math and our AP students of all grades will participate in their subject area AP tests. The full testing schedule is below for your reference.
| | |
The State of California assesses schools by testing 11th-grade students in Science, English, and Math. A school's scores on these tests are a major factor in determining a school's ranking, which some colleges look at when they are considering students for admission. Thus, a strong performance on the SBAC ELA, Math, and CAST Tests is absolutely pivotal in keeping our California school ranking strong and giving our students the best chance with admission at the top colleges and universities.
Please join PVHS Staff in encouraging our students to prepare and do their best on these upcoming tests and to Go for the Green, the highest school ranking a school can achieve on the CAASPP tests.
For more information about the exam: http://www.cde.ca.gov/ta/tg/ca
For information on opting out of state tests for 11th-grade students,
please contact our associate principal, Mr. Hill at hilld@pvpusd.net.
