Coronado City Manager Changes
With the departure this week of Interim City Manager Mark Ochenduszko, who was appointed by the City Council in April to fill in while a permanent city manager was found, Assistant City Manager Dominique Albrecht will be filling in temporarily as acting city manager. Coronado's new city manager, Tina Friend, arrives on Sept. 16. Friend comes to Coronado after serving as city manager of Scotts Valley, California. Prior to that, she served for nearly a decade as assistant city manager for the City of Santa Cruz. She holds a law degree from Santa Clara University School of Law, a master’s degree in Public Policy from Georgetown University and a bachelor’s degree from the University of Idaho. She has more than 16 years of management and executive level experience in coastal California local government and will lead the City well.

Coronado Cays Master Plan Public Workshop Set for Sept. 9
The City plans to hold a public workshop at 6 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 9, in the Nautilus Room of the Coronado Community Center, 1845 Strand Way. The community is invited to hear a brief summary of what City staff has heard from residents over the past 18 months and to obtain consensus regarding park design guidelines. Design guidelines that receive consensus will be used to develop design elements, including renderings of each, for the public’s consideration at a future workshop prior to the creation of a master plan.
Tennis and Pickleball Public Workshop Aug. 31

Recreation and Golf Services is holding a tennis and pickleball workshop on Tuesday, Aug. 31, from 4 to 6 p.m. The workshop will be held at the Coronado Community Center, 1845 Strand way, in the Nautilus Room. The tennis and pickleball communities are encouraged to attend and provide their input. At the Aug. 9 Parks and Recreation Commission meeting, City staff presented a stepped approach in response to Council direction in completing a comprehensive study on tennis and pickleball facility improvement, user group access and community interests. Feedback from the meeting included comments on memberships, fees, maximizing resident booking time, among other items. This valuable feedback will be used to structure the workshop, the first scheduled to be held on the topic.
Free Summer Shuttle Ends Labor Day; Ridership Update
The end of summer is fast approaching, which means the Free Summer Shuttle’s last day will be on Monday, Sept. 6, Labor Day. It has been a great public amenity whether using it to run errands, get to the beach, visit local shops or just get around town. Residents and visitors were able to avoid traffic and searching for parking during the busy summer months. The free service, sponsored by the City and Discover Coronado, kicked off on June 6 and served 12,474 passengers in June. In July, there were 21,464 passengers including 1,676 riders on the Fourth of July weekend. The July figures for 2021 totaled about 37% of all riders in the same month in 2019, pre-pandemic. There were 5,970 riders on July 3 and 4 in 2019; 28% fewer people rode over the holiday in 2021 compared to 2019. The special Fourth of July Cays Shuttle, from the Cays to the Community Center, ran two days this year and had 880 riders over two days compared to 557 riders on July 4 (one day shuttle only) in 2019. The decrease could be attributed to the pandemic as fewer visitors came to Coronado, some people may not have wanted to use public transit or some chose to use their own vehicles or other forms of mobility. Although ridership has been down when compared to pre-COVID times, the City has seen a steady increase in ridership from June to July this year. Riders can ride free in September as part of the Metropolitan Transit System’s promotion of its new PRONTO system.
Coronado Labor Day Holiday Schedule 2021
The City will observe the Labor Day holiday on Monday, Sept. 6. Here’s a list that includes facilities that will be open with varying hours of operation. Public Services crews will not sweep streets on the holiday. EDCO will not perform regular residential trash collection on Labor Day. As a result, service will be delayed one day. Here is the Labor Day schedule:

Library to Offer Bi-monthly 'Film Forum Coronado'
The Coronado Public Library, in partnership with the Coronado Island Film Festival, presents Film Forum Coronado, a new bi-monthly feature. Film Forum Coronado will be held on the first and third Wednesday of each month at 6:45 p.m. in the Library's Winn Room. Film expert Ralph de Lauro will provide a brief introduction to each film and, after the screening, lead a discussion of the cinematography, for instance, how lighting or camera angles were used to contribute to a scene’s mood or propel the story. The first movie in the series will be Hitchcock’s “Strangers on a Train” (1951, 101 minutes), on Wednesday, Sept. 1 from 6:45 p.m. to 8:45 p.m.

City Working to Synchronize New Traffic Signal
The new traffic signal at the intersection of Silver Strand Boulevard and Avenida del Sol is activated. The City is working with the California Department of Transportation, which manages the roadway, to make timing adjustments to improve the efficiency of the signal. Eventually, the signals will be equipped with the same adaptive signal software as the signals at Avenida des las Arenas and in front of Naval Amphibious Base Coronado. This will allow these signals to continually adjust to the volume of traffic going through the intersections.
Macaroni, a 2-year-old grey and orange domestic shorthair cat, is this week’s Pet of the Week. Macaroni is a fun, frisky boy who is a real people cat. He has a big personality and would prefer to be the only feline in his new home. He weighs 12 pounds. His adoption fee is $50. To find out more about Macaroni, call PAWS of Coronado, which runs the City’s Animal Care Facility, at (619) 522-7371.
