Cays Park Master Plan Process to be Restarted
The City will restart work to develop a Coronado Cays Park Master Plan, following City Council approval this week to move forward with three concept plans and robust community engagement. In 2019, the City initiated a master planning effort to address rehabilitation at the park due to its age. The irrigation system and uneven and stressed playing fields need to be replaced. The City awarded a contract to a landscape architect firm in July 2019 to develop a plan to consider other park amenities. Several public workshops were held, surveys taken, and the landscape architects began developing three conceptual master plans. The pandemic stopped the project, but work resumed earlier this year. At its meeting this week, the Council directed staff to return in January with a timeline for continuing with the project with three concept plans as well as a report on existing field usage. This will help the community and Council understand the uses and impacts of the three plans. The City will conduct extensive community outreach through the next phases of this project and expects Council approval of a final plan next summer.
City Engineer Ed Walton Retiring After 33 Years
Ed Walton, longtime City Engineer for the City of Coronado, is retiring this month after 33 years of service. Walton was hired in 1988 as an associate engineer and worked his way to principal engineer, then City engineer. Walton served on regional transportation and public works associations and a position with the National Public Works Association. He is most proud to have worked on the undergrounding of utilities on the Silver Strand, the Glorietta Bay Pump Station structural repairs, oversight of the Transbay Force Main Replacement project, Adella and Coronado Rotary Plaza improvements, and the Cays Pump Station Replacement project. He will be greatly missed.

Rain Hits Region, Another Storm on the Way
Scattered showers that hit the region Thursday, Dec. 9., have eased and temperatures will remain 5 to 10 degrees below average through the weekend. Forecasters say a significant storm system will produce widespread rain and strong winds across California, including along the coast, early next week. Up to 1.5 inches of rain could fall in Coronado. As a reminder, sandbags are available for residents, while supplies last, at four locations: First Street and Alameda Boulevard; Fourth Street and Alameda; North Beach; and at the Cays near the Fire Station. No contractors please. A general water advisory is typically issued for all coastal waters that recommends against water contact for 72 hours following rain.
'Sit a Spell and Play a Tune' Public Art Pianos Stored for Winter
The public pianos that had been out and available to play from spring through fall are safely tucked into storage for the winter. The “Sit a Spell and Play a Tune” public art project debuted in May 2017 with one artfully decorated piano installed in Coronado Rotary Plaza. In 2018, the Coronado Cultural Arts Commission expanded the program with two additional pianos. In 2021 all three pianos returned after a year and a half in storage due to the pandemic. Pianos were sited at Rotary Plaza, Adella Plaza and the Coronado Public Library and feature the artwork from local artists Michael Ives, Tina Christiansen and Karrie Jackson. The pianos are opened and closed on a daily basis by three “piano caretakers” and are on display May through the Holiday Parade. The City would like to thank the El Cordova Hotel, High Tide Bottle Shop & Kitchen and the staff at the Coronado Public Library for their daily care of the pianos.
Upcoming 2021 Holiday Schedule
The City of Coronado will observe the Christmas and New Year’s Day holidays on Friday, Dec. 24, and Friday, Dec. 31. The City reminds residents that all municipal facilities, except the Golf Course, will be closed on Christmas Day and New Year's Day. The Golf Course will be open on Christmas Day and New Year’s Day but will close at 1 p.m. Public Services crews will not sweep streets and EDCO will not perform regular residential trash collection on the observed holidays, Dec. 24 and Dec. 31. As such, there will be a one-day delay in trash collection. Certain City of Coronado departments and services have various hours of operation on Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve. See schedule right.

Coronado held the annual lighting of the civic holiday tree and menorah at Coronado Rotary Plaza in conjunction with the annual Coronado Chamber of Commerce Holiday Parade and Open House on Friday, Dec. 3. The holiday lights will remain on through December at the plaza at Orange and Isabella avenues near Tenth Street. Here are more upcoming holiday programs and events. Orange Avenue Holiday Banners: Enjoy the traditional holiday-themed banners displayed along Orange Avenue from First Street to Avenida de las Arenas, which were recently installed. The banner program was initiated in 2016 and has been continuously funded through a Discover Coronado Community Enhancement Grant. The banner program includes two of five series open to local nonprofit organizations seeking to display banners along Orange either during the September 15 through Thanksgiving series or the January through March series. In the new year, nonprofit banners will highlight the Coronado Flower Show celebrating its 100th anniversary. The program is administered by the Coronado Cultural Arts Commission. Currently, the City is accepting applications from local artists for the “2022 Celebrate Local Artists” series slated to display April through June. Applications are due Jan. 22. For more information, call (619) 522-2633.
San Diego Bay Parade of Lights: Holiday lights will be on display during the San Diego Bay Parade of Lights this Sunday, Dec. 12, and next Sunday, Dec. 19. The Port of San Diego event features 80 vessels festively lit for the holiday season. The parade kicks off at 5 p.m. at Shelter Island. The route proceeds to Harbor Island, the Embarcadero, Seaport Village, Cesar Chavez Park and then the Ferry Landing in Coronado. The procession takes up to 1.5 hours to pass from any given viewing point. Tidelands Park and the Ferry Landing are good spots in Coronado to view the parade. Visitors are requested to please respect private parking and property.

Letters to Santa:  Letters to Santa Claus will be accepted through Dec. 15 at the Community Center, 1845 Strand Way. Send your letter to the North Pole via our North Pole Express Mailbox and be sure to include a self-addressed, stamped envelope so Santa can answer letters.

Ride the Lights: Ride the Lights is set for Sunday, Dec. 12. Meet at Spreckels Park for the 4:45 p.m. ride through nearby Coronado neighborhoods to enjoy the decorations. Make sure you have night lights and helmets. Enjoy cookies, cocoa and other holiday festivities after the ride. This event is brought to you by the City of Coronado and its Mobility Commission. Don't forget to decorate your bike for the 2.9-mile route. Rain will cancel the ride.
Village Theatre Remains Closed Awaiting Seat Delivery
In anticipation of the impending release of new seats from a cargo ship stuck in customs, the old seats in the Village Theatre were removed from all three screening rooms. However, continued bottlenecks have held up final delivery. The movie house will remain closed until the new seats arrive and are installed. Installation is estimated to take no more than a week. The Village Theatre had reopened in early October after being closed since last year due to public health restrictions. The theater operator is hopeful the seats will arrive by the end of the year. The 1940s-era theater underwent an extensive renovation more than a decade ago after it fell into a bad state of disrepair. The City got involved and together with Vintage Cinemas reopened the theater on June 24, 2011.
Police Participate in Every 15 Minutes Program
The City of Coronado Police Department and several public safety agencies participated in the Every 15 Minutes Program at Coronado High School this week. The City reminded the community that there would be a mock accident set up on Seventh Street near Coronado High School and the sounds of lights and sirens for a short period of time. The roadway was closed to motorists on Wednesday, Dec. 8, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. The program focuses on high school juniors and seniors, and challenges them to think about drinking, driving, personal safety, the responsibility of making mature decisions and the impact their decisions have on family, friends, and their community. The program is funded by the California Office of Traffic Safety and coordinated by the California Highway Patrol.
Shop With a Cop Program Co-sponsored by Coronado Police
Shop with a Cop: Every year, Coronado participates in the Shop with a Cop program to help provide holiday gifts for children who are nominated by their teachers, counselors and mentors. Last Saturday, Dec. 4, Coronado and San Diego Harbor Police co-sponsored the event, which drew law enforcement officers from around San Diego County who worked to fulfill the children’s wishes. Children had breakfast and watched a show at Sea World followed by a shopping trip at Target. The event is in its 28th year. Getting to spend the day getting to better know the youth and families they serve in the neighborhoods they patrol was the best part of the event, officers said.
Project Updates
Aquatics Center and High School Tennis Courts Lighting
The Coronado High School lights and poles are completed, and the construction crews have relocated to start the Coronado Library courts. Light readings taken last week at the Aquatics Center exceeded light level specifications required for aquatics: 1) Illuminating Engineering Society standards for pools and pool decks with high activity; and 2) NCAA illuminance targets for intercollegiate play for swimming pools. The readings at Glorietta Tennis Complex will require LED light angle adjustments to increase the output.

Odie and Garfield, a sweet duo of bonded orange tabby cats, are this week’s Pets of the Week. Odie and Garfield are mellow and friendly. Relinquished together, they would like to stay with one another. Odie is spunky and Garfield more reserved. Both males are social and low maintenance. Odie and Garfield are currently in one of PAWS of Coronado's many foster homes. The City relies on the generosity of volunteers who are dedicated to fostering animals while they await adoption. The City's Animal Care Facility has an abundance of animals right now. Thanks to all our fosters. The adoption fee for Odie and Garfield is $50 each or $75 for both. To find out more about Odie and Garfield, call Paws of Coronado, which runs the city’s Animal Care Facility at (619) 522-7371.
