Storm Brings Local Flooding, Minor Widespread Damage
A powerful and windy storm earlier this week caused local flooding and minor but widespread damage in Coronado. The storm that hit Tuesday, Dec. 14, brought strong winds that whipped off signs, flags and banners around the City and uprooted trees. Winds also tore off large branches from trees at the Golf Course, along Orange Avenue and on private property. In total, Coronado received about an inch of rain. There was flooding in the usual places such as First Street from A to B avenues, the Five Points Intersection and along Orange Avenue between Sixth and Tenth streets. The heavy rain also closed the Golf Course, Aquatics Center and playing fields for the day. The high winds prompted Lifeguards to assist a sailboat skipper off his vessel during the height of the storm. The man was taken to the Lifeguard Tower to warm up and released. Public Services crews cleared out beach and other City outfalls multiple times to keep the stormwater drainage clear of debris. Residents were advised of free sandbags in the days leading up to the storm. Overall, the City fared well and worked quickly to clean debris and make repairs as needed. The City encourages residents to download our Ask Coronado app and use it to report any repair issues or messages regarding any damage they see.
Masks Required Indoors Regardless of Vaccination Status
A statewide mandate implemented this week once again requires masks indoors in all public places regardless of vaccine status. The California Department of Public Health announced this week that the new requirements would begin Wednesday, Dec. 15, in response to the increase in cases and hospitalizations in the state and the new Omicron variant. The new mandate is set to last at least through Jan. 15, 2022, and will be reevaluated. County health officials follow state requirements and urge county residents to wear a mask indoors. The City of Coronado will operate under the same conditions it did before the mask mandate was lifted June 15, which focused on education and compliance.
Village Theatre Reopens Today After New Seats Installed
The new seats for the Village Theatre, stuck aboard a cargo ship and in customs for months, have finally been installed and the theatre is set to reopen. The seats arrived at Coronado’s only movie house on Tuesday, Dec. 14, and were installed in a few days. The Village Theatre had reopened in early October after being shut down last year due to the pandemic. The operator shut down in anticipation of receiving the new seats. However, more shipping delays kept the theater closed after the old seats were removed. The theater, which opened in 1947 with one screen, underwent extensive renovations more than a decade ago after it fell into neglect. The City got involved and together with Vintage Cinemas reopened the three-screen theater in June 2011. The movie theater is set to reopen on Friday, Dec. 17, with “Spiderman: No Way Home” in the main theater. The City is happy to see the theater reopen.
Burglary Suspect Arrested in the Cays
Just after 6 a.m. on Monday, Dec. 13, Coronado Police received a call of a man jumping into a backyard on Delaport Way in the Coronado Cays. Officers set up a perimeter and called a San Diego Police Department K9 unit to assist. A second call came in from a home on Tunapuna Lane, where a 16-year-old resident found the subject in her home stealing a cell phone. The teen screamed and the man ran out. A few minutes later, another Tunapuna resident watched his home security camera footage with one of the K9 officers and they determined the man was inside his garage. Officers found the man in the garage attic and after brief negotiations, the 29-year-old man was taken into custody. Stolen property from several homes was found on the man and behind a block wall where his was hiding earlier in the morning. Police advise residents to keep doors and windows locked and to call them immediately if they see or hear something that doesn’t seem right.
Upcoming 2021 Holiday Schedule
The City of Coronado will observe the Christmas and New Year’s Day holidays on Friday, Dec. 24, and Friday, Dec. 31. The City reminds residents that all municipal facilities, except the Golf Course, will be closed on Christmas Day and New Year's Day. The Golf Course will be open on Christmas Day and New Year’s Day but will close at 1 p.m. Public Services crews will not sweep streets and EDCO will not perform regular residential trash collection on the observed holidays, Dec. 24 and Dec. 31. As such, there will be a one-day delay in trash collection. Certain City of Coronado departments and services have various hours of operation on Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve. See schedule right.
Coronado 2021 Holiday Events

Ride the Lights was held Sunday, Dec. 12. It was a fun and festive holiday bike ride around the City that drew hundreds of bicyclists on holiday-decorated bikes. More holiday events are ahead.
San Diego Bay Parade of Lights: Holiday lights will be on display during the final San Diego Bay Parade of Lights this Sunday, Dec. 19. The Port of San Diego event features 80 vessels festively lit for the holiday season. The parade kicks off at 5 p.m. at Shelter Island. The route proceeds to Harbor Island, the Embarcadero, Seaport Village, Cesar Chavez Park and then the Ferry Landing in Coronado. The procession takes up to 1.5 hours to pass from any given viewing point. Tidelands Park and the Ferry Landing are good spots in Coronado to view the parade. Visitors are requested to please respect private parking and property.

Public Services Project Updates
Aquatics Center and High School Tennis Courts Lighting
Work on the project to upgrade the lighting at the Aquatics Center and High School Tennis Courts was delayed due to rain late last week and early this week. It will resume when weather permits. Light readings at the High School and Library courts were scheduled for Thursday, Dec. 16, to confirm that the courts meet International Tennis Federation Class II illumination performance criteria. The readings also test the spill light levels to ensure they meet the reduced light levels built into the design, which is intended to minimize disruption to nearby residents.
Trinidad Pump Station: Work to install landscaping at the site of the Trinidad Pump Station has been delayed due to scheduling issues and recent rain. The contractor will be back on site to commence landscaping installation once the soil dries sufficiently.
