______City Manager's Weekly Update

The Coronado Police Department would like to share a few traffic information resources that will come in handy when there are closures of the San Diego-Coronado Bridge or other major incidents. First, residents are encouraged to sign up for Nixle.com alerts as a primary source of information from the City about bridge closures and other important traffic impacts. Second, visit the CHP’s traffic site and click on “Border” under the Communications Center or visit the California Department of Transportation site, both of which post information about disruptions to state Route 75, including the bridge. Third, follow the Police Department on the City of Coronado Police Department’s Facebook and Instagram pages, and the City of Coronado’s Twitter page. We will send information and updates when possible. The City understands how disruptive bridge closures are and ask for the community’s patience. We continue to work on strategies to best resolve these disruptions with our regional public safety agencies.

The City of Coronado will observe the Presidents Day holiday on Monday, Feb. 21, and reminds residents and businesses that some municipal facilities around town will remain open. Public Services crews will not sweep streets on the holiday. EDCO will perform regular residential trash collection on Presidents Day. Certain City of Coronado departments and services will be open with varying hours of operation.

The Coronado Cays Park Master Planning process is getting a restart following recent City Council approval to develop three alternative concept plans. The Council expects to hear from a consultant on the project in March about park usage and recommended best practices for the Council's consideration. Part of the restart effort includes a robust public outreach campaign -- Restart, Review, Engage and Approve. The campaign aligns with a new schedule to promote public awareness of the project. Residents and other stakeholders will soon see planned outreach efforts, including press releases, social media posts, banners, news ads as well as print and video materials tied to upcoming public meetings and key project dates. The City will provide regular updates to the Cays Park Master Plan project page on CommentCoronado.org and a dedicated section in the Weekly Update to notify the entire Coronado community of the process and how to stay up to date.

Backstop Repairs: Public Services Facilities Division completed significant repairs to the backstop at the Cays Park. The repairs included new chain link fencing and wood. 

Golf Course Sustainability: The Golf Course maintenance staff spread a new layer of mulch in the planters around the parking lot and clubhouse areas this week. The mulch will dramatically improve water retention, weed control and add to the beautification of the facility.

Live Theatrical Reading: A free live theatrical reading of the play “Tiny Beautiful Things” will be presented by Breakthrough Workshop Theatre in the Coronado Public Library’s Winn Room, on Sunday, Feb. 13, from 2:30 p.m. to 4 p.m. Based on the best-selling book by Cheryl Strayed, the play was presented at San Diego’s Globe Theatre in the 2018/19 season. The play features a struggling writer who takes on an advice column. It is a play about reaching out when you’re stuck, healing when you’re broken, and finding the courage to take on difficult life questions. Due to some adult themes, the play is recommended for mature audiences.

Tinker Tuesday: Kids can learn how to make homemade musical instruments such as a pan flute and a popsicle stick kazoo at next week’s Tinker Tuesday. Meet outside in Library Park on Tuesday, Feb. 15, from 3:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. for the hands-on educational program that allows children to explore, create, design, and problem solve focusing on STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math) concepts.

Swing Concert: Enjoy vocal stylings -- from Motown to swing -- of the Maria Christina Band on Friday, Feb. 18, from 1 to 2 p.m. in the Library's Winn Room. This event will be broadcast live on the Library's Facebook page and will be available on-demand following the event. This is the first vocal group since the fall and first concert at the Library since early January due to COVID restrictions. Registration is strongly recommended. Please register below for this event. All-in person events will be subject to County of San Diego Health Department guidelines.

Babysitter Camp: Recreation and Golf Services’ Babysitter Training Camp is back. If your young teen is interested in caring for and mentoring younger children, starting a babysitting business is the perfect choice. Babysitter Training is Saturday, Feb. 26, from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Call (619) 522-7342 to register or register online by clicking on the link below.

Glow Pickleball Lights Up Courts: A Glow Pickleball event was held at the Coronado Cays Tennis Courts earlier this month. Impact Activities hosted the event and both time slots for play sold out quickly. Staff set up black lights, provided glowing tape and balls, fun music and snacks. Details about the next event will be coming soon.

Aquatics Center Update: The Aquatics Center will be closed on Sunday, Feb. 20, for all-staff training and will have modified hours on Monday, Feb. 21, from 5:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. for Presidents Day.

Fostering Opportunities: This week, instead of a Pet of the Week, the City and PAWS of Coronado are asking for the community’s help. The Animal Care Facility is currently over capacity and in need of fosters for both dogs and cats. Fostering can be a wonderful opportunity for people who have lots of love to give to a pet but aren’t able to have one of their own. The placement is temporary and all expenses are covered. Kitten season is coming up and PAWS will need fosters experienced with bottle-feeding neonatal kittens. If you are interested in becoming a foster for PAWS, you can find the application online at PawsofCoronado.org under Support PAWS.
