This year the team built a robot from scratch that could move and stack blocks the way a forklift does in a warehouse (using a joystick like you do with your Xbox).  They also programmed it to drive on its own, knocking balls off of their base and moving blocks into pre-arranged locations.  These programs used smart phones. The teams that were the most competitive taught themselves how to program (they didn't know it beforehand).  Whether someone liked building, using tools (including saws), programming, 3D printing or designing, there was something to do for everyone.

Kelley DeGross:  Available to tutor students in grades 2 - 4, any subject area.  Willing to do small groups to make tutoring more affordable.

During the months of February and March, students in grades K-8 have lessons in bothinternet safety and personal safety. We use materials from Netsmartz ( https://www.netsmartzkids.org/ ) and the Monique Burr Foundation/ Child Safety Matters ( https://mbfchildsafetymatters.org/ ) to meet Archdiocesan required objectives. ( http://www.archspm.org/sections/child-components/ ).

This is also a great time to remind all adults about the Safe Environment training required to volunteer with students at St. Michael Catholic School. This includes a live course called VIRTUS and a few online training modules, a background check, and a signed Code of Conduct. Before you are allowed to coach, work one- on-one with students, or attend field trips or overnight trips, volunteers must complete the "essential three" listed above.

VOLUNTEER TRAINING

If you volunteer with your child's class or if you come in at a separate time to shelve books, we ask that everyone attends a training with Mrs. Sher, Mrs. Martell, or Mrs. Morgan. If possible, we prefer to train 2 or more people at a time. We want all media center volunteers to be trained in consistently,
